In you, O Mother, is preserved undistorted what was made in the image of God; for taking up the cross, you followed Christ and by example taught, that we should overlook the flesh, since it passes away, and instead look after the soul, since it is immortal. Hermanos, espero firmemente no sentirme en modo alguno fracasado. Al contrario, tengo la plena seguridad, ahora como siempre, de que Cristo será glorificado en mi cuerpo, por mi vida o por mi muerte, pues para mí la vida es Cristo, y el morir, una ganancia. Pero si el vivir en el cuerpo significa para mí trabajo fecundo, no sé qué escoger. Me siento apremiado por ambos extremos. Por un lado, desearía partir y estar con Cristo, lo cual, ciertamente, es con mucho lo mejor; mas, por otro, quedarme en el cuerpo es más necesario para ustedes. Con esta convicción, sé que me quedaré y seguiré con todos ustedes para progreso y gozo de su fe, a fin de que tengan por mi causa un nuevo motivo de satisfacción en Cristo Jesús, cuando yo vuelva a estar entre ustedes. Lo que importa es que lleven una conducta digna del Evangelio de Cristo. [BJ-SAOGM]
Brethren, I shall not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. En aquel tiempo, lo que se decía de Jesús se propagó por toda Judea y por toda la región circunvecina. Los discípulos de Juan le llevaron todas estas noticias. Entonces él, llamando a dos de ellos, los envió a preguntar al Señor: «¿Eres tú el que ha de venir, o debemos esperar a otro?» Aquellos hombres se acercaron a él y le dijeron: «Juan el Bautista nos ha enviado a preguntarte si eres tú el que ha de venir o debemos esperar a otro.» En aquel momento curó a muchos de sus enfermedades y dolencias y de malos espíritus, y dio vista a muchos ciegos. Después les dijo: «Vayan y cuenten a Juan lo que han visto y oído: Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos quedan limpios, los sordos oyen, los muertos resucitan y se anuncia a los pobres la Buena Nueva. ¡Y dichoso aquel a quien yo no le sirva de escándalo!» Cuando los mensajeros de Juan se alejaron, se puso a hablar de Juan a la gente: «¿Qué salieron a ver en el desierto? ¿Una caña agitada por el viento? ¿Qué salieron a ver, si no? ¿Un hombre elegantemente vestido? ¡No! Los que visten magníficamente y viven con molicie están en los palacios. Entonces, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿Un profeta? Desde luego que sí, y más que un profeta. De éste es de quien está escrito: Voy a enviar a mi mensajero delante de ti, que preparará por delante tu camino. Les digo que, entre los nacidos de mujer, no hay ninguno mayor que Juan; sin embargo, el más pequeño en el Reino de Dios es mayor que él.» Toda la gente que le escuchó, incluso los publicanos, reconocieron la salvación que Dios les ofrecía y se hicieron bautizar con el bautismo de Juan. Pero los fariseos y los legistas, al no aceptar su bautismo, frustraron el plan que Dios tenía para con ellos. [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, the report concerning Jesus spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country. The disciples of John told him of all these things. And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.” When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.’ I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” When they heard this all the people and the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John; but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him. It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.
