Por aquellos días, mientras Pablo les esperaba en Atenas, sentía indignación en su interior al ver la ciudad llena de ídolos. Discutía en la sinagoga con los judíos y con los que adoraban a Dios; y lo mismo hacía diariamente en el ágora con los que por allí se encontraban. Trababan también conversación con él algunos filósofos epicúreos y estoicos. Unos decían: «¿Qué querrá decir este charlatán?» Otros comentaban: «Parece ser un predicador de divinidades extranjeras.» Lo decían porque anunciaba a Jesús y hablaba de la resurrección. Un día lo tomaron consigo y lo llevaron al Areópago. Una vez allí, le preguntaron: «¿Podemos saber cuál es esa nueva doctrina que tú expones? Es que te oímos decir cosas extrañas y querríamos saber qué significan.» Todos los atenienses y los forasteros que residían allí sólo sabían pasar el tiempo contando u oyendo la última novedad. Pablo, de pie en medio del Areópago, comenzó así: «Atenienses, veo que ustedes son, por todos los conceptos, los más respetuosos de la divinidad. Pues al pasar y contemplar sus monumentos sagrados, he encontrado también un altar en el que estaba grabada esta inscripción: ‘Al Dios desconocido.’ Pues bien, vengo a anunciarles lo que adoran sin conocer. «El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que hay en él, que es Señor del cielo y de la tierra, no habita en santuarios fabricados por mano de hombres; ni es servido por manos humanas, como si de algo estuviera necesitado él, que a todos da la vida, el aliento y demás cosas. Él creó, de un solo principio, todo el linaje humano, para que habitase sobre toda la tierra, y fijó los tiempos determinados y los límites del lugar donde habían de habitar, con el fin de que buscasen a la divinidad, para ver si a tientas la buscaban y la hallaban. Pero no pensemos que se encuentra lejos de cada uno de nosotros, pues en él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos, como han dicho algunos de ustedes: ‘Porque somos también de su linaje.’ Si somos, pues, del linaje de Dios, no debemos pensar que la divinidad sea algo semejante al oro, la plata o la piedra, modelados por el arte y el ingenio humanos. Dios, pues, pasando por alto los tiempos de la ignorancia, anuncia ahora a los hombres que todos y en todas partes deben convertirse, porque ha fijado el día en que va a juzgar al mundo según justicia, por medio del hombre que ha destinado, y del que ha dado garantía ante todos al resucitarlo de entre los muertos.» Al oír que mencionaba la resurrección de los muertos, algunos se burlaron de él, y otros dijeron: «Sobre esto ya te oiremos otra vez.» Entonces Pablo los dejó allí y se marchó. Pero algunas personas se adhirieron a él y creyeron, entre ellos Dionisio Areopagita, una mujer llamada Damaris y algunos otros junto con ellos. [BJ-SAOGM]
In those days, while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the market place every day with those who chanced to be there. Some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers met him. And some said, “What would this babbler say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities” — because he preached Jesus and the resurrection. And they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is which you present? For you bring some strange things to our ears; we wish to know therefore what these things mean.” Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. So Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything. And he made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your poets have said, ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, a representation by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead.” Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We will hear you again about this.” So Paul went out from among them. En aquel tiempo, Jesús estaba enseñando y había sentados algunos fariseos y doctores de la ley que habían venido de todos los pueblos de Galilea y Judea, y de Jerusalén. El poder del Señor le hacía obrar curaciones. En esto, unos hombres trajeron en una camilla a un paralítico y trataban de introducirle, para ponerle delante de él. Pero no encontrando por dónde meterle, a causa de la multitud, subieron a la azotea, le bajaron con la camilla a través de las tejas y le pusieron en medio, delante de Jesús. Viendo Jesús la fe que tenían, dijo: «Hombre, tus pecados te quedan perdonados.» Los escribas y fariseos empezaron a pensar: «¿Quién es éste, que dice blasfemias? ¿Quién puede perdonar pecados sino sólo Dios?» Conociendo Jesús sus pensamientos, les dijo: «¿Qué están pensando en sus corazones? ¿Qué es más fácil, decir: ‘Tus pecados te quedan perdonados’, o decir: ‘Levántate y anda’? Pues para que sepan que el Hijo del hombre tiene en la tierra poder de perdonar pecados —dijo al paralítico—: ‘A ti te digo, levántate, toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa’.» Y al instante, levantándose delante de ellos, tomó la camilla en que estaba acostado y se fue a su casa, glorificando a Dios. El asombro se apoderó de todos y glorificaban a Dios. Y llenos de temor, decían: «Hoy hemos visto cosas increíbles.» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, as Jesus was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. And behold, men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only?” When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — he said to the man who was paralyzed — “I say to you, rise, take up your bed and go home.” And immediately he rose before them, and took up that on which he lay, and went home, glorifying God. And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.” [RSV]

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.
