Only-begotten Son and Logos of God, being immortal, You condescended for our salvation to take flesh from the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary and, without change, became man. La memoria del justo es digna de la alabanza, pero te es suficiente el testimonio del Señor, oh Precursor. Porque, en verdad, te manifestaste más honorable que los profetas, pues has sido merecedor de bautizar en las corrientes del Jordán a Aquél que había sido anunciado. Por tanto, después de haber luchado gozosamente por la Verdad, anunciaste a aquellos que moraban en el Hades, a Dios que se manifiesta en la carne y borra el pecado del mundo, concediéndonos la gran misericordia. The memory of the just is observed with hymns of praise; for you suffices the testimony of the Lord, O Forerunner. You have proved to be truly more ven’rable than the Prophets, since you were granted to baptize in the river the One whom they proclaimed. Therefore, when for the truth you had contested, rejoicing, to those in Hades you preached the Gospel, that God was manifested in the flesh, and takes away the sin of the world, and grants to us the great mercy. Hermanos, a nosotros, los apóstoles, Dios nos ha asignado el último lugar, como condenados a muerte, puestos a modo de espectáculo para el mundo, los ángeles y los seres humanos. Nosotros pasamos por locos a causa de Cristo; ustedes, por sabios en Cristo. Nosotros somos débiles; ustedes, fuertes. Ustedes, estimados; nosotros, despreciados. Hasta ahora venimos pasando hambre, sed y desnudez. Somos abofeteados, y andamos de aquí para allá. Nos fatigamos trabajando manualmente. Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. En aquel tiempo se enteró el tetrarca Herodes de la fama de Jesús, y dijo a sus criados: «Ese es Juan el Bautista; él ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso actúan en él fuerzas milagrosas.» Es que Herodes había detenido a Juan, le había encadenado y puesto en la cárcel, por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo. Porque Juan le decía: «No te es lícito tenerla.» Y aunque quería matarlo, temió a la gente, porque le tenían por profeta. Mas, llegado el cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías danzó en medio de todos gustando tanto a Herodes, que éste le prometió bajo juramento darle lo que pidiera. Ella, impulsadapor su madre, «dame aquí, dijo, en una bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.» Se entristeció el rey, pero, a causa del juramento y de los comensales, ordenó que se la dieran, y envió a decapitar a Juan en la cárcel. Su cabeza fue traída en una bandeja y entregada a la muchacha, la cual se la llevó a su madre. Llegando después sus discípulos, recogieron el cadáver y lo sepultaron; y fueron a informar a Jesús. Al oírlo Jesús, se retiró de allí en una barca, aparte, a un lugar solitario. En cuanto lo supieron las gentes, le siguieron a pie de las ciudades. [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus; and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.” For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison, for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; because John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given; he sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. [RSV]

Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ᾿ ἰδίαν· καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων.

Digno es, en verdad, aclamarte a ti, Theotokos, la siempre bienaventurada e inmaculada, y Madre de nuestro Dios. A la más honorable que los querubines y más gloriosa, incomparablemente que los serafines; a ti, la que incorruptamente, diste a luz al Verbo de Dios, a la verdaderamente Theotokos, te exaltamos.
It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.
