Por aquellos días, los apóstoles se habían dispersado a causa de la persecución originada tras la muerte de Esteban, llegaron en su recorrido hasta Fenicia, Chipre y Antioquía, sin predicar la palabra a nadie más que a los judíos. Pero había entre ellos algunos chipriotas y cirenenses que, al llegar a Antioquía, hablaron también a los griegos y les anunciaron la Buena Nueva del Señor Jesús. El Señor les daba fuerzas para tal cometido, y un crecido número recibió la fe y se convirtió al Señor. Cuando la noticia llegó a oídos de la iglesia de Jerusalén, enviaron a Bernabé a Antioquía. Al llegar Bernabé y ver todo lo que Dios había obrado entre ellos, se alegró, y exhortaba a todos a permanecer unidos al Señor, con firme propósito, porque era un hombre bueno, lleno de Espíritu Santo y de fe. Por entonces una considerable multitud se agregó al Señor. Partió después para Tarso en busca de Saulo, y, en cuanto lo encontró, lo llevó consigo a Antioquía. Estuvieron juntos durante un año entero en aquella iglesia e instruyeron a una gran muchedumbre. En Antioquía fue donde, por primera vez, los discípulos recibieron el nombre de ‘cristianos’. Por aquel tiempo bajaron unos profetas de Jerusalén a Antioquía. Uno de ellos, llamado Ágabo, movido por el Espíritu, se levantó y profetizó que una feroz hambruna azotaría toda la tierra (es la que hubo en tiempo de Claudio). Los discípulos determinaron enviar algunos recursos, según las posibilidades de cada uno, para los hermanos que vivían en Judea. Así lo hicieron: se los enviaron a los presbíteros por medio de Bernabé y de Saulo. [BJ-SAOGM]
In those days, the apostles who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none except Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians. Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabos stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius. Dijo el Señor a sus discípulos: «Quien a ustedes los escucha, a mí me escucha; quien a ustedes los rechaza, a mí me rechaza; y quien me rechaza a mí, rechaza al que me ha enviado.» Regresaron los setenta y dos y dijeron alegres: «Señor, hasta los demonios se nos someten en tu nombre.» Él les dijo: «Yo veía a Satanás caer del cielo como un rayo. Miren, les he dado el poder de pisotear serpientes y escorpiones, así como cualquier demostración de fuerza del enemigo; nada les podrá hacer daño. Pero no se alegren de que los espíritus se les sometan; alégrense de que sus nombres estén escritos en los cielos.» En aquel momento, se llenó de gozo Jesús en el Espíritu Santo y dijo: «Yo te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque has ocultado estas cosas a sabios e inteligentes y se las has revelado a gente sencilla. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.
