Por aquellos días, cuando los apóstoles nos dirigíamos al lugar de oración, nos salió al encuentro una esclava poseída de un espíritu adivino, que solía pronunciar oráculos, proporcionando así mucho dinero a sus amos. Nos seguía a Pablo y a nosotros gritando: «Estos hombres son siervos del Dios Altísimo, que les anuncian un camino de salvación.» Venía haciendo esto durante muchos días. Cansado Pablo, se volvió y dijo al espíritu: «En nombre de Jesús Cristo te mando que salgas de ella.» Y en aquel mismo instante salió. Al ver sus amos que se les había ido su esperanza de ganancia, prendieron a Pablo y a Silas y los arrastraron hasta el ágora, ante los magistrados. Los presentaron a los pretores y dijeron: «Estos hombres alborotan nuestra ciudad; son judíos y predican unas costumbres que nosotros, por ser romanos, no podemos aceptar ni practicar.» La gente se amotinó contra ellos, de modo que los pretores ordenaron que les arrancaran la ropa y que los azotaran con varas. Después de haberles dado muchos azotes, los metieron en la cárcel y mandaron al carcelero que los custodiase con sumo cuidado. Éste, al recibir tal orden, los metió en el calabozo interior y sujetó sus pies en el cepo. Hacia la media noche, Pablo y Silas estaban en oración cantando himnos a Dios. Los presos los escuchaban. De repente se produjo un terremoto tan fuerte que los mismos cimientos de la cárcel se conmovieron. Al momento quedaron abiertas todas las puertas y se soltaron las cadenas de todos. Al despertarse el carcelero y ver las puertas de la cárcel abiertas, sacó la espada con intención de suicidarse, creyendo que los presos habían huido. Pero Pablo le gritó: «No te causes ningún daño, que estamos todos aquí.» El carcelero pidió luz, entró de un salto y se arrojó tembloroso a los pies de Pablo y Silas. Los sacó fuera y les dijo: «Señores, ¿qué tengo que hacer para salvarme?» Le respondieron: «Ten fe en el Señor Jesús y te salvarás junto con tu familia.» Y anunciaron la palabra del Señor a él y a todos los de su casa. En aquella misma hora de la noche el carcelero los tomó consigo y les lavó las heridas. Inmediatamente recibieron el bautismo él y todos los suyos. Los hizo entonces subir a su casa, les preparó la mesa y se alegró con toda su familia por haber creído en Dios. [BJ-SAOGM]
In those days, as we apostles were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by soothsaying. She followed Paul and us, crying, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days. But Paul was annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the rulers; and when they had brought them to the magistrates they said, “These men are Jews and they are disturbing our city. They advocate customs which it is not lawful for us Romans to accept or practice.” The crowd joined in attacking them; and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and every one’s fetters were unfastened. When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out and said, “Men, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their wounds, and he was baptized at once, with all his family. Then he brought them up into his house, and set food before them; and he rejoiced with all his household that he had believed in God. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, según caminaba Jesús, vio a un hombre ciego de nacimiento. Sus discípulos le preguntaron: «Rabbí, ¿quién pecó, él o sus padres, para que haya nacido ciego?» Respondió Jesús: «Ni él pecó ni sus padres; es para que se manifiesten en él las obras de Dios. Mientras es de día tenemos que trabajar en las obras del que me ha enviado; cuando llega la noche, nadie puede trabajar. Mientras estoy en el mundo, soy luz del mundo.» Dicho esto, escupió en tierra, hizo barro con la saliva y untó con el barro los ojos del ciego. Luego le dijo: «Vete, lávate en la piscina de Siloé» (que quiere decir ‘Enviado’). Él fue, se lavó y volvió ya viendo. Los vecinos y los que solían verle antes mendigar comentaban: «¿No es éste el que se sentaba para mendigar?» Unos decían: «Es él». «No —decían otros—, será alguien que se le parece.» Pero él decía: «Soy yo.» Le preguntaron entonces: «¿Cómo, pues, se te han abierto los ojos?» Él respondió: «Ese hombre que se llama Jesús hizo barro, me untó los ojos y me dijo: ‘Vete a Siloé y lávate.’ Yo fui, me lavé y vi.» Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Dónde está ése?» Respondió: «No lo sé.» Entonces llevaron a los fariseos al que antes era ciego. Entonces le preguntaron otra vez al ciego: «¿Y tú qué dices de él, ya que te ha abierto los ojos?» Él respondió: «Que es un profeta.» Los judíos no creían que aquel hombre hubiera sido ciego; así que llamaron a los padres del que había recobrado la vista y les preguntaron: «¿Es éste su hijo, el que dicen que nació ciego? ¿Cómo, pues, ve ahora?» Sus padres respondieron: «Nosotros sabemos que éste es nuestro hijo y que nació ciego. Pero cómo ve ahora, lo ignoramos; y tampoco sabemos quién le ha abierto los ojos. Pregúntenle, que ya tiene edad y puede hablar de sí mismo.» Sus padres decían esto por miedo a los judíos, pues éstos se habían puesto ya de acuerdo en que, si alguno lo reconocía como Cristo, quedara excluido de la sinagoga. Por eso dijeron sus padres: «Edad tiene; pregúntenselo a él.» Llamaron por segunda vez al hombre que había sido ciego y le dijeron: «Da gloria a Dios. Nosotros sabemos que ese hombre es un pecador.» Les respondió: «Si es un pecador, no lo sé. Sólo sé una cosa: que era ciego y ahora veo.» Le preguntaron entonces: «¿Qué hizo contigo? ¿Cómo te abrió los ojos?» Él replicó: «Se lo he dicho ya, y no me han escuchado. ¿Por qué quieren oírlo otra vez? ¿Es qué quieren también ustedes hacerse discípulos suyos?» Ellos le llenaron de injurias y le dijeron: «Tú serás discípulo de ese hombre; nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés. Nosotros sabemos que a Moisés le habló Dios; pero ése no sabemos de dónde es.» El hombre les respondió: «Eso es lo extraño: que ustedes no sepan de dónde es y que me haya abierto a mí los ojos. Sabemos que Dios no presta atención a los pecadores; sin embargo, escucha al que es religioso y cumple su voluntad. Jamás se ha oído decir que alguien haya abierto los ojos de un ciego de nacimiento. Si éste no viniera de Dios, no podría hacer nada.» Ellos le respondieron: «Has nacido todo entero en pecado, ¿y pretendes darnos lecciones?» Y lo echaron fuera. Jesús se enteró de que lo habían echado fuera. Cuando se encontró con él, le preguntó: «¿Tú crees en el Hijo del hombre?» Él respondió: «¿Y quién es, Señor, para que crea en él?» Jesús le dijo: «Le has visto. Es el que está hablando contigo». A lo que él contestó: «Creo, Señor.» Y se postró ante él. [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, as Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day; night comes, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and anointed the man’s eyes with the clay, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar, said, “Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is he”; others said, “No, but he is like him.” He said, “I am the man.” They said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash’; so I went and washed and received my sight.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. The Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes and I washed, and I see.” Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” There was a division among them. So they again said to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight, and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess him to be the Christ he was to be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, “He is of age, ask him.” So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “Whether he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you too want to become his disciples?” And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered, “Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of God?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who speaks to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe”; and he worshiped him. El que resucitó de entre los muertos, Cristo, verdadero Dios nuestro, por las intercesiones de su purísima e inmaculada Madre, por el poder de la vivificante y preciosa Cruz, la protección de las celestiales potestades incorpóreas, las súplicas del venerable y glorioso profeta, precursor y bautista Juan, de los santos, gloriosos y alabadísimos apóstoles, de los santos, gloriosos y victoriosos mártires, de nuestros justos y teóforos padres, (santo patrono del templo local); de los santos y justos familiares del Señor, Joaquín y Ana, y de todos los santos, tenga misericordia de nosotros y sálvanos, pues eres un Dios bondadoso y filántropo.
May He who rose from the dead, Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
