Por aquellos días, todos quedaron sorprendidos al ver la valentía de Pedro y Juan, sabiendo además que eran hombres sin instrucción ni cultura. Por una parte, reconocían que Pedro y Juan habían estado con Jesús; y, al mismo tiempo, veían de pie, junto a ellos, al hombre que había sido curado; así que no podían replicar. Les mandaron salir fuera del Sanedrín y se pusieron a deliberar. Decían: «¿Qué haremos con estos hombres? Todos los habitantes de Jerusalén han podido ver el signo tan manifiesto que han realizado; no podemos negar eso. Pero vamos a amenazarles para que no hablen ya más a nadie en nombre de ése, a fin de que el asunto no se divulgue más entre la gente.» Los llamaron y les mandaron que de ninguna manera hablasen o enseñasen en el nombre de Jesús. Mas Pedro y Juan les respondieron: «Juzguen si es justo delante de Dios obedecerles a ustedes más que a Dios. No podemos nosotros dejar de hablar de lo que hemos visto y oído.» Ellos volvieron a amenazarles, pero tuvieron que soltarlos, pues no hallaban manera de castigarlos; además, toda la gente alababa a Dios por lo que había ocurrido, pues el hombre en quien se había realizado este signo de curación tenía más de cuarenta años. In those days, when the Jews saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they wondered; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus. But seeing the man that had been healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is manifest to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to any one in this name.” So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people; for all men praised God for what had happened. For the man on whom the sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. [RSV]

Dijo el Señor a los judíos que vinieron a Él: «Mi Padre sigue trabajando, y yo también trabajo.» Por eso, los judíos trataban con mayor empeño de matarle, porque no sólo quebrantaba el sábado, sino que llamaba a Dios su propio Padre, haciéndose a sí mismo igual a Dios. Jesús, pues, tomando la palabra, les decía: «En verdad, en verdad les digo: el Hijo no puede hacer nada por su cuenta, sino lo que ve hacer al Padre: lo que hace él, eso también lo hace igualmente el Hijo. Porque el Padre quiere al Hijo y le muestra todo lo que él hace. Y le mostrará obras aún mayores que éstas, para que se asombren. Porque, como el Padre resucita a los muertos y les da la vida, así también el Hijo da la vida a los que quiere. Porque el Padre no juzga a nadie; sino que todo juicio lo ha entregado al Hijo, para que todos honren al Hijo como honran al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo no honra al Padre que lo ha enviado. En verdad, en verdad les digo: el que escucha mi palabra y cree en el que me ha enviado, tiene vida eterna y no incurre en juicio, sino que ha pasado de la muerte a la vida.» [BJ-SAOGM]
The Lord said to the Jews who came to him, “My Father is working still, and I am working.” This was why the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever he does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all that he himself is doing; and greater works than these he will show him, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” [RSV]
