El Presbítero al querido Gayo, a quien amo en la verdad. Querido, pido en mi oración que te vaya bien en todo y que tu salud física sea tan buena como la espiritual. Me alegré mucho cuando vinieron unos hermanos dando testimonio de tu verdad, de cómo vives en la verdad. No siento alegría mayor que oír que mis hijos caminan en la verdad. Querido, obras como creyente en lo que haces por los hermanos, y eso que son forasteros. Ellos han confirmado tu generosidad ante la comunidad. Harás bien en proveerlos para su viaje de una manera que Dios considere digna. Pues por el Nombre se pusieron en camino, sin recibir nada de los gentiles. Por eso debemos acoger a tales personas, para hacernos colaboradores en la obra de la Verdad. He escrito alguna cosa a la comunidad; pero Diótrefes, ése que ambiciona el primer puesto entre ellos, no quiere recibirnos. Por eso, cuando vaya, le recordaré las cosas que está haciendo, cómo nos critica con palabras llenas de malicia. Y, por si esto no fuera suficiente, tampoco recibe a los hermanos; y, a los que desean hacerlo, se lo impide y los expulsa de la comunidad. Querido, no imites lo malo, sino lo bueno. El que obra el bien es de Dios; el que obra el mal no ha visto a Dios. Todos, y hasta la misma Verdad, dan testimonio de Demetrio. También nosotros damos testimonio, y sabes que nuestro testimonio es verdadero. Tengo mucho que escribirte, pero no quiero hacerlo con tinta y pluma. Espero verte pronto y hablaremos de viva voz. The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in health; I know that it is well with your soul. For I greatly rejoiced when some of the brethren arrived and testified to the truth of your life, as indeed you do follow the truth. No greater joy can I have than this, to hear that my children follow the truth. Beloved, it is a loyal thing you do when you render any service to the brethren, especially to strangers, who have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey as befits God’s service. For they have set out for his sake and have accepted nothing from the heathen. So we ought to support such men, that we may be fellow workers in the truth. I have written something to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge my authority. So if I come I will bring up what he is doing, prating against me with evil words. And not content with that, he refuses himself to welcome the brethren, and also stops those who want to welcome them and puts them out of the church. Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. He who does good is of God; he who does evil has not seen God. Demetrios has testimony from every one, and from the truth itself; I testify to him too, and you know my testimony is true. I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink; I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together face to face. Peace be to you. The friends greet you. En aquel tiempo, al aproximarse a Betfagé y Betania, al pie del monte llamado de los Olivos, Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: «Vayan al pueblo que está enfrente; al entrar, encontrarán un pollino atado, sobre el que no ha montado todavía ningún hombre. Desátenlo y tráiganlo. Y si alguien les pregunta: ‘¿Por qué lo desatan?’, díganle: ‘Porque el Señor lo necesita.’» Fueron, pues, los enviados y lo encontraron, tal como les había dicho. Cuando desataban el pollino, les dijeron los dueños: «¿Por qué desatan el pollino?» Ellos les contestaron: «Porque el Señor lo necesita.» Después de traérselo, echaron sus mantos sobre el pollino e hicieron montar en él a Jesús. Mientras él avanzaba, extendían sus mantos por el camino. Cerca ya de la bajada del monte de los Olivos, toda la multitud de los discípulos, llenos de alegría, se pusieron a alabar a Dios a grandes voces por todos los milagros que habían visto. Decían: «¡Bendito el rey que viene en nombre del Señor! Paz en el cielo y gloria en las alturas.» Algunos de los fariseos que estaban entre la gente le dijeron: «Maestro, reprende a tus discípulos.» Respondió: «Les digo que si éstos se callan gritarán las piedras.» Llegó el día de los Ázimos, en el que se había de sacrificar el cordero de Pascua. Jesús envió a Pedro y a Juan con este encargo: «Vayan y prepárennos la Pascua para que la comamos.» Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Dónde quieres que la preparemos?» Les respondió: «Cuando entren en la ciudad, les saldrá al paso un hombre con un cántaro de agua; síganle y verán que entra en una casa. Digan entonces al dueño: ‘El Maestro te pregunta: ¿Dónde está la sala donde pueda comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?’ Él les enseñará en el piso superior una sala grande, ya dispuesta; hagan allí los preparativos.» Fueron y lo encontraron tal como les había dicho, y prepararon la Pascua. Cuando llegó la hora, se puso a la mesa con los apóstoles y les dijo: «Con ansia he deseado comer esta Pascua con ustedes, antes de padecer; porque les digo que ya no volveré a comerla hasta que halle su cumplimiento en el Reino de Dios.» Tomó luego una copa, dio gracias y dijo: «Tomen esto y repártanlo entre ustedes; porque les digo que, a partir de este momento, no beberé del producto de la vid hasta que llegue el Reino de Dios.» Tomó luego pan, dio gracias, lo partió y se lo dio, diciendo: «Éste es mi cuerpo que se entrega por ustedes; hagan esto en recuerdo mío.» De igual modo, después de cenar, tomó la copa y dijo: «Esta copa es la nueva Alianza en mi sangre, que se derrama por ustedes. Miren, la mano del que me entrega está aquí conmigo, sobre la mesa. Ciertamente el Hijo del hombre se marcha, según está determinado, pero ¡ay de aquel por quien es entregado!» Entonces se pusieron a discutir entre sí quién de ellos sería el que iba a hacer aquello. Entre ellos hubo también un altercado sobre quién de ellos parecía ser el mayor. Él les dijo: «Los reyes de las naciones las dominan como señores absolutos y los que las oprimen se hacen llamar bienhechores. Pero no actúen así ustedes, pues el mayor entre ustedes ha de ser como el más joven, y el que gobierna, como el que sirve. Porque, ¿quién es mayor, el que está a la mesa o el que sirve? ¿No es el que está a la mesa? Pues yo estoy en medio de ustedes como el que sirve. Ustedes son los que han perseverado conmigo en mis pruebas; yo, por mi parte, dispongo un Reino para ustedes, como mi Padre lo dispuso para mí, para que coman y beban a mi mesa en mi Reino y se sienten sobre tronos para juzgar a las doce tribus de Israel. ¡Simón, Simón! Mira que Satanás ha solicitado el poder sacudirlos como trigo, pero yo he rogado por ti, para que tu fe no desfallezca. Y tú, cuando hayas vuelto, confirma a tus hermanos.» Él replicó: «Señor, estoy dispuesto a ir contigo hasta la cárcel y la muerte.» Pero Jesús contestó: «Te digo, Pedro, que hoy mismo, antes de que cante el gallo, habrás negado tres veces que me conoces.» Les dijo también: «Cuando los envié sin bolsa, sin alforja y sin sandalias, ¿les faltó algo?» Ellos contestaron: «Nada.» Y añadió: «Pues ahora, el que tenga bolsa, que la tome, y también alforja; y el que no tenga, que venda su manto y se compre una espada. Porque les digo que es necesario que se cumpla en mí eso que está escrito: ‘Ha sido contado entre los malhechores’. Porque lo que se refiere a mí toca a su fin.» Ellos dijeron: «Señor, aquí hay dos espadas.» Respondió él: «Basta.» Salió y, como de costumbre, fue al monte de los Olivos. Los discípulos le siguieron. At that time, when Jesus drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village opposite, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat; untie it and bring it here. If any one asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this, ‘The Lord has need of it.’” So those who were sent went away and found it as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their garments on the colt they set Jesus upon it. And as he rode along, they spread their garments on the road. As he was now drawing near, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying; “Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat it.” They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house which he enters, and tell the householder, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished; there make ready.” And they went, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover. A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves. You are those who have continued with me in my trials; and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Digno es, en verdad, aclamarte a ti, Theotokos, la siempre bienaventurada e inmaculada, y Madre de nuestro Dios. A la más honorable que los querubines y más gloriosa, incomparablemente que los serafines; a ti, la que incorruptamente, diste a luz al Verbo de Dios, a la verdaderamente Theotokos, te exaltamos.
It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.
