Psalm 103 (104).

Bendice, alma mía, al Señor: ¡Dios mío, qué grande eres! Te vistes de belleza y majestad, la luz te envuelve como un manto. Extiendes los cielos como una tienda, construyes tu morada sobre las aguas; las nubes te sirven de carroza, avanzas en las olas del viento; los vientos te sirven de mensajeros; el fuego llameante, de ministro. Asentaste la tierra sobre sus cimientos, y no vacilará jamás; la cubriste con el manto del océano, y las aguas se posaron sobre las montañas; pero a tu bramido huyeron, al fragor de tu trueno se precipitaron, mientras subían los montes y bajaban los valles: cada cual al puesto asignado. Trazaste una frontera que no traspasarán, y no volverán a cubrir la tierra. De los manantiales sacas los ríos, para que fluyan entre los montes; en ellos beben las fieras de los campos, el asno salvaje apaga su sed; junto a ellos habitan las aves del cielo, y entre las frondas se oye su canto. Desde tu morada riegas los montes, y la tierra se sacia de tu acción fecunda; haces brotar hierba para los ganados, y forraje para los que sirven al hombre. Él saca pan de los campos, y vino que le alegra el corazón; y aceite que da brillo a su rostro, y alimento que le da fuerzas. Se llenan de savia los árboles del Señor, los cedros del Líbano que El plantó: allí anidan los pájaros, en su cima pone casa la cigüeña. Los riscos son para las cabras, las peñas son madriguera de erizos. Hiciste la luna con sus fases, el sol conoce su ocaso. Pones las tinieblas y viene la noche, y rondan las fieras de la selva; los cachorros rugen por la presa, reclamando a Dios su comida. Cuando brilla el sol, se retiran, y se tumban en sus guaridas; el hombre sale a sus faenas, a su labranza hasta el atardecer. Cuántas son tus obras, Señor, y todas las hiciste con sabiduría; la tierra está llena de tus criaturas. Ahí está el mar: ancho y dilatado, en él bullen, sin número, animales pequeños y grandes; lo surcan las naves, y el leviatán que modelaste para que retoce. Todos ellos aguardan a que les eches comida a su tiempo: se la echas, y la atrapan; abres tu mano, y se sacian de bienes; escondes tu rostro, y se espantan; les retiras el aliento, y expiran y vuelven a ser polvo; envías tu aliento, y los creas, y repueblas la faz de la tierra. Gloria a Dios para siempre, goce el Señor con sus obras, cuando Él mira la tierra, ella tiembla; cuando toca los montes, humean. Cantaré al Señor, tocaré para mi Dios mientras exista: que le sea agradable mi poema, y yo me alegraré con el Señor. Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, You are magnified exceedingly; You clothe Yourself with thanksgiving and majesty, who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, who stretch out the heavens like a curtain; You are He who covers His upper chambers with water, who makes the clouds His means of approach, who walks on the wings of the winds, who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire. He established the earth on its stable foundation; it shall not be moved unto ages of ages. The deep like a garment is His covering; the waters shall stand upon the mountains; at Your rebuke they shall flee; at the sound of Your thunder, they shall be afraid. The mountains rise up, and the plains sink down to the place You founded for them. You set a boundary they shall not pass over; neither shall they return to cover the earth. You are He who sends springs into the valley; the waters shall pass between the mountains; they shall give drink to all the wild animals of the field; the wild asses shall quench their thirst; the birds of heaven shall dwell beside them; they shall sing from the midst of the rocks. You are He who waters the mountains from His higher places; the earth shall be satisfied with the fruit of Your works. You are He who causes grass to grow for the cattle, and the green plant for the service of man, to bring forth bread from the earth; and wine gladdens the heart of man, to brighten his face with oil; and bread strengthens man’s heart. The trees of the plain shall be full of fruit, the cedars of Lebanon, which You planted; there the sparrows shall make their nests; the house of the heron takes the lead among them. The high mountains are for the deer; the cliff is a refuge for the rabbits. He made the moon for seasons; the sun knows its setting. You established darkness, and it was night, wherein all the wild animals of the forest will prowl about; the young lions roar and snatch their prey, and seek their food from God. The sun arises, and they are gathered together; and they shall be put to bed in their dens. Man shall go out to his work and to his labor until evening. O Lord, Your works shall be magnified greatly; You made all things in wisdom; the earth was filled with Your creation. There is this great and spacious sea: the creeping things are there without number; the living things are there, both small and great; there the ships pass through; there is this dragon You formed to play therein. All things wait upon You, that You may give them food in due season. When You give it to them, they shall gather it; when You open Your hand, all things shall be filled with Your goodness. But when You turn Your face away, they shall be troubled; when You take away their breath, they shall die and return again to their dust. You shall send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth. Let the glory of the Lord be forever; the Lord shall be glad in His works; He looks upon the earth and makes it tremble; He touches the mountains, and they smoke. En el principio creó Dios el cielo y la tierra. La tierra era caos y confusión: oscuridad cubría el abismo, y un viento de Dios aleteaba por encima de las aguas. Dijo Dios: «Haya luz», y hubo luz. Vio Dios que la luz estaba bien, y separó Dios la luz de la oscuridad; llamó Dios a la luz «día», y a la oscuridad llamó «noche». Atardeció y amaneció: día primero. Dijo Dios: «Haya un firmamento por en medio de las aguas, que las separe unas de otras.» E hizo Dios el firmamento; separó las aguas de por debajo del firmamento de las aguas de por encima del firmamento. Y así fue. Llamó Dios al firmamento «cielo». Atardeció y amaneció: día segundo. Dijo Dios: «Acumúlense las aguas de debajo del firmamento en un solo conjunto, y déjese ver lo seco»; y así fue. Llamó Dios a lo seco «tierra», y al conjunto de las aguas lo llamó «mar»; y vio Dios que estaba bien. Dijo Dios: «Produzca la tierra vegetación: hierbas que den semillas y árboles frutales que den fruto según su especie, con su semilla dentro, sobre la tierra.» Y así fue. La tierra produjo vegetación: hierbas que dan semilla según sus especies y árboles que dan fruto con la semilla dentro según sus especies; y vio Dios que estaba bien. In the beginning God made heaven and earth. The earth was invisible and unfinished; and darkness was over the deep. The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the water. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw the light; it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day; the darkness He called Night; and there was evening and morning, one day. Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water, and let it divide the water from the water”; and it was so. Thus God made the firmament, and God divided the water under the firmament from the water above the firmament. So God called the firmament Heaven, and God saw that it was good; and there was evening and morning, the second day. Then God said, “Let the water under heaven be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. The water under heaven was gathered into its places, and the dry land appeared. So God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas; and God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the herb of grass, bearing seed according to its kind and likeness. Let the fruit tree bear fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind on earth.” It was so. Thus the earth brought forth the herb of grass, bearing seed according to its kind and likeness. The fruit tree bore fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind on earth. God saw that it was good. So evening and morning were the third day. [SAAS]

Elías le dijo a Eliseo: «Quédate aquí, porque el Señor me envía al Jordán.» Respondió: «¡Por el Dios vivo y por tu propia vida, que no te dejaré!» Y los dos continuaron caminando. Cincuenta hombres de los discípulos de los profetas iban también de camino y se pararon frente (al Jordán), a cierta distancia de Elías y Eliseo, que se detuvieron al lado del Jordán. Elías se quitó el manto, lo enrolló y golpeó con él las aguas, que se separaron a un lado y a otro, y ambos pasaron sobre terreno seco. Mientras pasaban, Elías dijo a Eliseo: «Pídeme lo que quieras que haga por ti antes de que sea arrebatado de tu lado.» Eliseo respondió: «Que pasen a mí dos tercios de tu espíritu.» Replicó: «Pides algo difícil. Si alcanzas a verme cuando sea arrebatado de tu lado, entonces pasará a ti; si no, no pasará.» Iban hablando mientras caminaban, cuando de pronto un carro de fuego con caballos de fuego los separó a uno del otro. Elías subió al cielo en el torbellino. Eliseo lo veía y clamaba: «¡Padre mío, padre mío! ¡Carros y caballería de Israel!» Cuando dejó de verlo, agarró sus vestidos y los desgarró en dos. Recogió el manto que había caído de las espaldas de Elías, volvió al Jordán y se detuvo a la orilla. Tomó el manto que había caído de las espaldas de Elías y golpeó las aguas, pero éstas no se separaron. Dijo entonces: «¿Dónde está el Señor, el Dios de Elías?» Golpeó otra vez las aguas, que se separaron a un lado y a otro, y Eliseo pasó sobre terreno seco. [BJ-SAOGM]

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, please, for the Lord sent me on to the Jordan.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” So both of them went on. Fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan. Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water. The water divided this way and that, and the two of them crossed on dry ground. So it was that during the time they crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I may do for you, before I am taken away from you.” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” So Elijah said, “You have asked a hard thing. If you see me when I am taken up from you, it shall be so for you; and if not, it shall not be so.” Thus it came to be, as they walked and continued to talk, behold a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and the fire separated them one from the other; and Elijah was taken up into heaven by a whirlwind. Then Elisha saw it and cried aloud, “Father, O father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” He saw Elijah no more, and he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces. Then he raised Elijah’s mantle, which fell from Elijah and upon Elisha, and Elisha returned and stood on the bank of the River Jordan. He took Elijah’s mantle which had fallen upon him and struck the water, but it did not divide. Then he said, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah himself?” And he struck the water again, and it divided this way and that. So Elisha crossed over. [SAAS]

Naamán, jefe del ejército de Siria, llegó con sus caballos y carros y se detuvo a la entrada de la casa de Eliseo. Éste envió un mensajero a decirle: «Ve y lávate siete veces en el Jordán. Tu carne te renacerá y quedarás limpio.» Naamán se enfadó y se marchó diciendo: «Yo había pensado que saldría seguramente a mi encuentro, se detendría, invocaría el nombre de su Dios, frotaría con su mano mi parte enferma y sanaría de la lepra. ¿No son mejores que todas las aguas de Israel el Abaná y el Farfar, ríos de Damasco? ¡Podía bañarme en ellos y quedar limpio!» Se dio la vuelta y se marchó furioso. Sus servidores se le acercaron y le dijeron: «Padre mío, si el profeta te hubiera mandado una cosa difícil, ¿no la habrías hecho? ¡Cuánto más si te ha dicho que te laves y que quedarás limpio!» Bajó, pues, y se bañó en el Jordán siete veces, conforme a la palabra del hombre de Dios. Su carne volvió a ser como la de un niño pequeño. Quedó limpio. [BJ-SAOGM]

Then Naaman, commander of the army of Syria, went with his horses and chariot and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and bathe in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean.” But Naaman became furious and went away, saying, “Indeed, I told myself that Elisha would come out to greet me; that he would stand and call on the name of his God; and that he would put his hand upon the place and heal the leprosy. Are not the Abanah and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Can I not bathe in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage. Then his servants approached and said to him, “If the prophet were to tell you to do something great, would you not complete it? But here the prophet said to you, ‘Bathe and be clean.’” So Naaman went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to Elisha’s instruction, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was cleansed. O Holy God, who is resting among the holy ones, praised by the Seraphim with the thrice-holy voice, glorified by the Cherubim, and worshiped by every celestial power, You have brought all things into being out of nothing. You have created man according to Your image and likeness and adorned him with all the gifts of Your grace. You give wisdom and understanding to the one who asks, and You overlook not the sinner, but have set repentance as the way of salvation. You have granted us, Your humble and unworthy servants, to stand even at this hour before the glory of Your holy Altar of sacrifice and to offer to You due worship and praise. Master, accept the Trisagion Hymn also from the lips of us sinners, and visit us in Your goodness. Forgive all our voluntary and involuntary transgressions, sanctify our souls and bodies, and grant that we may worship You in holiness all the days of our lives, through the intercessions of the holy Theotokos and of all the saints who have pleased You throughout the ages.

Hermanos, a pesar de sentirme libre respecto de todos, me he hecho esclavo de todos para ganar a los más que pueda. Me he hecho judío con los judíos, para ganar a los judíos; es decir que, para ganar a los que están bajo la Ley, me conduzco como alguien que está bajo la Ley —aun sin estarlo—. Por otra parte, para ganar a los que están sin ley, me conduzco como alguien que está sin ley, aunque, a decir verdad, no estoy sin ley de Dios, pues vivo bajo la ley de Cristo. Me he hecho débil con los débiles para ganar a los débiles; me he hecho todo a todos para salvar a algunos al precio que sea. Y todo esto lo hago por el Evangelio, para ser partícipe del mismo. Ya saben que en las carreras del estadio todos corren, pero sólo uno recibe el premio. ¡Pues corran, de manera que lo consigan! Los atletas se privan de todo, y total ¡por una corona que se marchita!; nosotros, en cambio, competimos por una inmarcesible. Así pues, yo corro, pero no sin ton ni son; y lucho como si fuera un púgil, pero no lanzando golpes al vacío; al contrario, golpeo mi cuerpo y lo esclavizo, no sea que, habiendo proclamado a los demás, resulte yo mismo descalificado. Brethren, though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews; to those under the law I became as one under the law — though not being myself under the law — that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law- not being without law toward God but under the law of Christ — that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Well, I do not run aimlessly, I do not box as one beating the air; but I pommel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. [RSV]

Soberano filántropo, haz brillar en nuestros corazones la luz pura de tu conocimiento, y abre los ojos de nuestro entendimiento a la comprensión de tus predicaciones evangélicas; inculca asimismo en nosotros el temor de tus bienaventurados mandamientos a fin de que, habiendo pisoteado todos los deseos carnales, vayamos en busca de un espiritual modo de vida, pensando y obrando cuanto es de tu agrado. Porque tú eres la iluminación de nuestras almas y cuerpos, Cristo Dios, y a ti rendimos gloria junto con tu Padre que no tiene principio y con tu santísimo, bondadoso y vivificador Espíritu, ahora y siempre y por los siglos de los siglos. Shine in our hearts, O benevolent Lord, the pure light of Your divine knowledge, and open the eyes of our mind that we may comprehend the proclamations of Your Gospels. Instill in us the fear that Your blessed commandments inspire, so that, crushing carnal desires, we may seek the spiritual citizenship, thinking and doing all those things that are pleasing to You. For You, Christ our God, are the illumination of our souls and bodies, and to You we offer up glory, and to Your Father, who is without beginning, and Your all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. En el año quince del imperio de Tiberio César, siendo Poncio Pilato procurador de Judea, Herodes tetrarca de Galilea, Filipo, su hermano, tetrarca de Iturea y de Traconítida, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilene, y durante el pontificado de Anás y Caifás, Juan, hijo de Zacarías, recibió en el desierto la palabra de Dios. Y fue por toda la región del Jordán proclamando un bautismo de conversión para perdón de los pecados, como está escrito en el libro de los oráculos del profeta Isaías: ‘Voz del que clama en el desierto: Preparen el camino del Señor, enderezcan sus sendas; todo barranco será rellenado, todo monte y colina será rebajado, lo tortuoso se volverá recto y las asperezas serán caminos llanos. Y todos verán la salvación de Dios.’ Decía, pues, a la gente que acudía para que les bautizara: «¡Raza de víboras!, ¿quién les ha enseñado a huir de la ira inminente? Den, más bien, frutos dignos de conversión, y no anden diciendo en su interior: ‘Tenemos por padre a Abrahán’, pues les digo que Dios puede de estas piedras dar hijos a Abrahán. No one bound by carnal desires and pleasures is worthy to approach, draw near, or minister to You, the King of Glory. For to serve You is great and awesome even for the heavenly powers. Lord our God, You created us and brought us into this life, showed us ways that lead to salvation, and granted us revelation of heavenly mysteries. You are the One who by the power of Your Holy Spirit ordained us to this ministry. Be indeed well pleased, Lord, that we became ministers of Your new covenant and celebrants of Your holy sacraments; and as we approach Your holy Altar of sacrifice, accept us, in the abundance of Your mercy, and make us worthy to offer You this rational and bloodless sacrifice for our own misdeeds and those committed in ignorance by the people. Accept it on Your holy and celestial and spiritual Altar of sacrifice as a sweet and pleasing aroma, and in return send down to us the grace of Your Holy Spirit.

We sinners join these blessed hosts and shout to You and say, O benevolent Master: Holy are You; indeed, all-holy, and there is no limit to the magnificence of Your holiness. And You are upright in all Your works; all that You have done to us, You have done in righteousness and true judgment. When You fashioned man from the earth and honored him with Your image, O God, You placed him in the Garden of Eden and promised him immortal life and the enjoyment of eternal blessings if he kept Your commandments. But he disobeyed You, the true God who had created him, and he succumbed to the serpent’s deceit, and he died because of his own offenses; and You, O God, in Your righteous judgment, expelled him from Paradise to this world. You returned him to the earth from which he was taken, and You provided for his salvation by regeneration, which is in Your Christ.

Keep the good in Your goodness; and in Your kindness, make the bad be good.

Le va a ser dada la gloria del Líbano, el esplendor del Carmelo y del Sarón. Podrá verse la gloria del Señor, el esplendor de nuestro Dios. Fortalezcan las manos débiles, afiancen las rodillas vacilantes. Digan a los de corazón inquieto: ¡Sean fuertes, no teman! Miren que llega su Dios vengador, Dios que les trae la recompensa; él vendrá y los salvará. Entonces se abrirán los ojos del ciego, las orejas de los sordos se destaparán. Entonces saltará el cojo como ciervo, la lengua del mudo gritará de júbilo. Pues manarán aguas en el desierto y correrán torrentes por la estepa; la paramera se trocará en estanque, y el país árido en manantial de aguas. Thus says the Lord: Be glad, you thirsty desert, and rejoice exceedingly, and let the desert blossom as a lily. The desert places of the Jordan shall blossom abundantly and rejoice exceedingly. The glory of Lebanon and the honor of Carmel shall be given to it, and My people shall see the glory of the Lord and the majesty of our God. Be strong, you relaxed hands and feeble knees. Be comforted, you fainthearted. Be strong, do not fear. Behold, our God renders judgment and will render it. He will come and save us. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall hear. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb will speak clearly. For water shall burst forth in the desert, and a valley in the thirsty land. The waterless desert shall become meadows, and the thirsty land springs of water. There will be the gladness of birds, a habitation of reeds and marshes. A pure way shall be there, and it shall be called a holy way. No unclean man shall pass through there, neither shall there be an unclean way there. But those dispersed shall walk in it, and they shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous animals go up on it, nor at all be found there. But the redeemed shall walk in it, and those gathered by the Lord shall return and come to Zion with gladness, and with everlasting gladness over their head. Háganme caso y comerán bien, disfrutarán con algo sustancioso. Escúchenme y acudan a mí; oigan, y su vida prosperará. Haré con ustedes una alianza eterna: las fieles promesas hechas a David. Le nombré testigo de las naciones, caudillo y legislador de los pueblos. Llamarás a un pueblo que no conocías, un pueblo que no te conocía a ti correrá, por amor del Señor tu Dios, por el Santo de Israel, que te honra. Busquen al Señor mientras se deja encontrar; invoquen al Señor mientras está cercano. Thus says the Lord: “You who are thirsty, go to the water, and all who have no money, go and buy wine and fat, and eat and drink without money and price. Why do you value at the price of money, and give your toil for what does not satisfy? Listen to Me and eat good things, and your soul will delight in good things. Incline your ears and follow my ways. Listen to Me, and your soul shall live in good things; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the holy and faithful things of David. Behold, I made him a witness among the Gentiles, a ruler and commander to the Gentiles. The Gentiles, which did not know you, shall call upon you, and the peoples who did not understand you shall take refuge in you, because of your God, the Holy One of Israel; for He glorified you.” Seek God, and when you find Him, call upon Him when He draws near to you. You intentionally brought the universe from nothing into being. You hold creation together by Your power. You govern the cosmos by Your providence. When You constituted the created world out of the Four Elements, You crowned the cycle of the year with four seasons. All the spiritual hosts tremble before You. The sun extols You. The moon glorifies You. The stars converse with You. Light obeys You. The depths shudder at You. Springs and fountains serve You. You stretched out the heavens like a curtain. You made firm the earth on the waters. You surrounded the sea with a wall of sand. You poured out the air for all to breathe.

We acknowledge Your gift, we proclaim Your mercy, we do not hide Your goodness. You freed the offspring of our nature. By being born You sanctified a virgin womb. All creation extolled You at Your epiphany. You, our God, were seen upon the earth and lived among men. When You sent down Your all-holy Spirit from heaven and crushed the heads of the dragons who were lurking in the water, You sanctified the River Jordan.

You are our God, who split the rock in the desert, and waters flowed, and brooks flooded, and You gave the people water to drink and satisfied them. You are our God, who with water and fire by Elijah disabused Israel of the deceit of Baal.

Incline Your ear and hear us, O Lord, who consented to be baptized in the Jordan River and sanctified the waters. Bless all of us, who are bowing our heads to show that we are Your servants. Grant us to be filled with Your sanctification, through either drinking this water or being sprinkled with it; and may it be to us for health of soul and body.
