Hermanos, todos los santos, por la fe, sometieron reinos, administraron justicia, alcanzaron las promesas y cerraron la boca a los leones; apagaron la violencia del fuego, escaparon al filo de la espada, curaron de sus enfermedades, fueron valientes en la guerra y rechazaron ejércitos extranjeros. Gracias a ellos, algunas mujeres recobraron resucitados a sus muertos. Unos fueron torturados, rehusando la liberación por conseguir una resurrección mejor; otros soportaron la prueba de burlas y azotes, de cadenas y prisiones. Fueron apedreados, torturados, aserrados, muertos a espada; anduvieron errantes, cubiertos de pieles de ovejas y de cabras; se vieron faltos de todo; fueron oprimidos y maltratados. Hombres de los que no era digno el mundo anduvieron errantes por desiertos y montañas, por grutas y cavernas. Y todos ellos, aunque alabados por su fe, no consiguieron el objeto de las promesas. Dios tenía dispuesto algo mejor para nosotros, de modo que no llegaran ellos sin nosotros a la perfección. Por tanto, también nosotros, teniendo en torno nuestro tan gran nube de testigos, sacudamos todo lastre y el pecado que nos asedia, y corramos con constancia la carrera que se nos propone, con los ojos fijos en Jesús, que inicia y lleva a la perfección la fe. Brethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated — of whom the world was not worthy — wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin that easily distracts, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of faith. En aquel tiempo, Jesús les ordenó enérgicamente a sus discípulos que a nadie hablaran acerca de él. Jesús comenzó a enseñarles que el Hijo del hombre debía sufrir mucho y ser reprobado por los ancianos, los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas; que le matarían y que resucitaría a los tres días. Hablaba de esto abiertamente. Pedro se lo llevó aparte y se puso a reprenderle. Pero él, volviéndose y mirando a sus discípulos, reprendió a Pedro, diciéndole: «¡Quítate de mi vista, Satanás!, porque tus pensamientos no son los de Dios, sino los de los hombres.» Llamando a la gente a la vez que a sus discípulos, les dijo: «Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz y sígame.» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, Jesus charged his disciples to tell no one about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men.” And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” [RSV]
