2 Tim. 2:20 – 26
Timoteo, hijo mío, en una casa grande no hay solamente utensilios de oro y de plata, sino también de madera y de barro; unos están destinados a usos nobles y otros al uso diario. Si alguno se mantiene limpio de las faltas mencionadas, será como un utensilio para uso noble, santificado y útil para su Dueño, dispuesto para toda obra buena. Huye de las pasiones juveniles y corre al alcance de la justicia, de la fe, de la caridad y de la paz, en unión de los que invocan al Señor con corazón puro. Evita las discusiones necias y estúpidas; sabes muy bien que engendran altercados. Y a un siervo del Señor no le conviene altercar, sino ser amable con todos, pronto a enseñar, sufrido; que sepa corregir con mansedumbre a los adversarios, por si Dios les otorga la conversión que les haga conocer plenamente la verdad y volver al buen sentido, librándose así de los lazos del diablo que los tiene cautivos, rendidos a su voluntad. Timothy, my son, in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earthenware, and some for noble use, some for ignoble. If any one purifies himself from what is ignoble, then he will be a vessel for noble use, consecrated and useful to the master of the house, ready for any good work. So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one, an apt teacher, forbearing, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth, and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, salieron los fariseos y comenzaron a discutir con él, pidiéndole un signo del cielo, con el fin de ponerle a prueba. Dando un profundo gemido desde lo íntimo de su ser, dijo: «¿Por qué esta generación pide un signo? Yo les aseguro que no se dará a esta generación ningún signo.» Y, dejándolos, se embarcó de nuevo, y se fue a la orilla opuesta. Se habían olvidado de tomar panes, y no llevaban consigo en la barca más que un pan. Jesús les hizo esta advertencia: «Abran los ojos y guárdense de la levadura de los fariseos y de la levadura de Herodes.» Ellos comentaban entre sí que no tenían panes. Dándose cuenta, les dijo: «¿Por qué están hablando de que no tienen panes? ¿Aún no comprenden ni entienden? ¿Es que tienen la mente embotada? ¿Teniendo ojos no ven y teniendo oídos no oyen? ¿No se acuerdan de cuando partí los cinco panes para los cinco mil? ¿Cuántos canastos llenos de trozos recogieron?» «Doce» —le dijeron—. «Y cuando partí los siete entre los cuatro mil, ¿cuántas espuertas llenas de trozos recogieron?» Contestaron: «Siete.» Y continuó: «¿Aún no entienden?» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, the Pharisees came to Jesus and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.” And he left them, and getting into the boat again he departed to the other side. Now they had forgotten to bring bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” And they discussed it with one another, saying, “We have no bread.” And being aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” [RSV]

Timoteo, hijo mío, no te avergüences ni del testimonio que has de dar de nuestro Señor, ni de mí, su prisionero. Al contrario, soporta conmigo los sufrimientos por el Evangelio, ayudado por la fuerza de Dios, que nos ha salvado y nos ha llamado con una vocación santa, no por nuestras obras, sino por su propia determinación y por su gracia, que nos concedió desde toda la eternidad en Cristo Jesús. Esta gracia se ha hecho patente ahora con la Manifestación de nuestro Salvador Cristo Jesús, quien ha destruido la muerte y ha hecho irradiar vida e inmortalidad por medio del Evangelio, para cuyo servicio he sido yo constituido heraldo, apóstol y maestro. Por esto precisamente soporto los sufrimientos que me aquejan. Pero no me siento un fracasado, porque sé muy bien en quién tengo puesta mi fe; y estoy convencido de que es poderoso para guardar mi depósito hasta aquel Día. Ten por norma las palabras sanas que oíste de mí, basadas en la fe y en la caridad de Cristo Jesús. Conserva el buen depósito mediante el Espíritu Santo que habita en nosotros. Ya sabes que todos los de Asia me han abandonado; entre ellos, Figelo y Hermógenes. Que el Señor conceda misericordia a la familia de Onesíforo, pues me reconfortó muchas veces y no se avergonzó de que yo estuviera preso. Al contrario, en cuanto llegó a Roma, me buscó solícitamente, hasta dar conmigo. Que el Señor le conceda disfrutar de la misericordia ante el Señor aquel Día. Además, tú sabes muy bien los buenos servicios que me prestó en Éfeso. [BJ-SAOGM]
Timothy, my son, do not be ashamed of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, and now has manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, and therefore I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, and among them Phygelus and Hermogenes. May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me; he was not ashamed of my chains, but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me eagerly and found me — may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day — and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus. En aquel tiempo, Jesús cruzaba por los sembrados y sus discípulos empezaron a abrir camino arrancando espigas. Los fariseos le dijeron: «Mira, ¿por qué hacen en sábado lo que no es lícito?» Él les respondió: «¿Nunca han leído lo que hizo David cuando tuvo necesidad, cuando él y los que lo acompañaban sintieron hambre, cómo entró en la Casa de Dios, en tiempos del Sumo Sacerdote Abiatar, y comió los panes de la presencia, que sólo a los sacerdotes es lícito comer, y cómo les dio también a los que estaban con él?» Y añadió: «El sábado ha sido instituido para el hombre, y no el hombre para el sábado. De suerte que el Hijo del hombre también es señor del sábado.» Entró de nuevo en la sinagoga, donde casualmente había un hombre que tenía la mano paralizada. Estaban al acecho a ver si le curaba en sábado, para poder acusarle. Dijo al hombre que tenía la mano seca: «Levántate y ponte ahí en medio.» Luego les preguntó: «¿Es lícito en sábado hacer el bien en vez del mal, salvar una vida en vez de destruirla?» Pero ellos callaban. Entonces, mirándolos con ira, apenado por su cerrazón de mente, dijo al hombre: «Extiende la mano.» Él extendió su mano y quedó restablecida. [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, Jesus was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” And he said to them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath; so the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.” Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. And they watched him, to see whether he would heal him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come here.” And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch it out,” and his hand was restored. [RSV]
