Timoteo, hijo mío, no te precipites en imponer a nadie las manos, no te hagas partícipe de los pecados ajenos. Consérvate puro. No bebas ya agua sola. Toma un poco de vino a causa de tu estómago y de tus frecuentes indisposiciones. Los pecados de algunas personas son notorios aun antes de que sean investigados; en cambio los de otras, lo son solamente después. Del mismo modo las obras, las que son bellas, son manifiestas; y las que no lo son, no pueden quedar ocultas. Todos los que están bajo el yugo de la esclavitud consideren a sus dueños como dignos de todo respeto, para que no se blasfeme del nombre de Dios y de la doctrina. Los que tengan dueños creyentes no les falten al respeto por ser hermanos, sino al contrario, que los sirvan todavía mejor por ser creyentes y amigos de Dios los que reciben sus servicios. Esto debes enseñar y recomendar. Si alguno enseña otra cosa y no se atiene a las sanas palabras de nuestro Señor Jesús Cristo y a la doctrina que es conforme a la piedad, está cegado por el orgullo y no sabe nada; sino que padece la enfermedad de las disputas y contiendas de palabras, de donde proceden las envidias, discordias, maledicencias, sospechas malignas, discusiones sin fin propias de gentes que tienen la inteligencia corrompida, que están privados de la verdad y que piensan que la piedad es un negocio. Y ciertamente es un gran negocio la piedad, con tal de que se contente con lo que tiene. Porque nosotros no hemos traído nada al mundo y nada podemos llevarnos de él. Mientras tengamos comida y vestido, estemos contentos con eso. Los que quieren enriquecerse caen en la tentación, en el lazo y en muchas codicias insensatas y perniciosas que hunden a los hombres en la ruina y en la perdición. Porque la raíz de todos los males es el afán de dinero, y algunos, por dejarse llevar de él, se extraviaron en la fe y se atormentaron con muchos sufrimientos. Tú, en cambio, hombre de Dios, huye de estas cosas. [BJ-SAOGM]
Timothy, my son, do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor participate in another man’s sins; keep yourself pure. No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. The sins of some men are conspicuous, pointing to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. So also good deeds are conspicuous; and even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden. Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be defamed. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brethren; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties. If any one teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching which accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit, he knows nothing; he has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, and wrangling among men who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such people. There is great gain in godliness with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain that we cannot take anything out of the world; but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs. But as for you, man of God, shun all this. [RSV]

Τινῶν ἀνθρώπων αἱ ἁμαρτίαι πρόδηλοί εἰσι, προάγουσαι εἰς κρίσιν, τισὶ δὲ καὶ ἐπακολουθοῦσιν· ὡσαύτως καὶ τὰ καλὰ ἔργα πρόδηλά ἐστι, καὶ τὰ ἄλλως ἔχοντα κρυβῆναι οὐ δύνανται. Ὅσοι εἰσὶν ὑπὸ ζυγὸν δοῦλοι, τοὺς ἰδίους δεσπότας πάσης τιμῆς ἀξίους ἡγείσθωσαν, ἵνα μὴ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἡ διδασκαλία βλασφημῆται. οἱ δὲ πιστοὺς ἔχοντες δεσπότας μὴ καταφρονείτωσαν, ὅτι ἀδελφοί εἰσιν, ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον δουλευέτωσαν, ὅτι πιστοί εἰσι καὶ ἀγαπητοὶ οἱ τῆς εὐεργεσίας ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι. Ταῦτα δίδασκε καὶ παρακάλει. εἴ τις ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖ καὶ μὴ προσέρχεται ὑγιαίνουσι λόγοις τοῖς τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ τῇ κατ᾽ εὐσέβειαν διδασκαλίᾳ, τετύφωται, μηδὲν ἐπιστάμενος, ἀλλὰ νοσῶν περὶ ζητήσεις καὶ λογομαχίας, ἐξ ὧν γίνεται φθόνος, ἔρις, βλασφημίαι, ὑπόνοιαι πονηραί, παραδιατριβαὶ διεφθαρμένων ἀνθρώπων τὸν νοῦν καὶ ἀπεστερημένων τῆς ἀληθείας, νομιζόντων πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν. ἀφίστασο ἀπὸ τῶν τοιούτων. ἔστι δὲ πορισμὸς μέγας ἡ εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας. οὐδὲν γὰρ εἰσηνέγκαμεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον, δῆλον ὅτι οὐδὲ ἐξενεγκεῖν τι δυνάμεθα· ἔχοντες δὲ διατροφὰς καὶ σκεπάσματα, τούτοις ἀρκεσθησόμεθα. οἱ δὲ βουλόμενοι πλουτεῖν ἐμπίπτουσιν εἰς πειρασμὸν καὶ παγίδα καὶ ἐπιθυμίας πολλὰς ἀνοήτους καὶ βλαβεράς, αἵτινες βυθίζουσι τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς ὄλεθρον καὶ ἀπώλειαν. ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστιν ἡ φιλαργυρία, ἧς τινες ὀρεγόμενοι ἀπεπλανήθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως καὶ ἑαυτοὺς περιέπειραν ὀδύναις πολλαῖς. Σὺ δέ, ὦ ἄνθρωπε τοῦ Θεοῦ, ταῦτα φεῦγε.

En aquel tiempo, como algunos hablaban del Templo, de cómo estaba adornado de bellas piedras y ofrendas votivas, Jesús dijo: «De esto que ven, llegarán días en que no quedará piedra sobre piedra que no sea derruida.» Le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿cuándo sucederá eso? Y ¿cuál será la señal de que todas estas cosas están para ocurrir?» Él dijo: «Miren, no se dejen engañar. Se levantará nación contra nación y reino contra reino. Habrá grandes terremotos, peste y hambre en diversos lugares, habrá cosas espantosas y grandes señales del cielo. Cuando vean a Jerusalén cercada por ejércitos, sepan entonces que se acerca su desolación. Entonces, los que estén en Judea que huyan a los montes; los que estén en medio de la ciudad que se alejen; y los que estén en los campos que no entren en ella; porque éstos son días de venganza en los que se cumplirá todo cuanto está escrito. ¡Ay de las que estén embarazadas o criando en aquellos días! Habrá, en efecto, una gran calamidad sobre la tierra y cólera contra este pueblo. Caerán a filo de espada, y serán llevados cautivos a todas las naciones y Jerusalén será pisoteada por los gentiles, hasta que el tiempo de las naciones llegue a su cumplimiento.» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, as some spoke to Jesus about the temple how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, “As for these things, which you see, the days will come when there shall not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And they asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign when this is about to take place?” And he said, “Take heed that you are not led astray. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it; for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. Alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! For great distress shall be upon the earth and wrath upon this people; they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” [RSV]
Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, λεγόντων τινῶν τῷ Ἰησοῦ περὶ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ὅτι λίθοις καλοῖς καὶ ἀναθήμασι κεκόσμηται, εἶπε· ταῦτα ἃ θεωρεῖτε, ἐλεύσονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται λίθος ἐπὶ λίθῳ ὃς οὐ καταλυθήσεται. ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγοντες· διδάσκαλε, πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται, καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι; ὁ δὲ εἶπε· βλέπετε μὴ πλανηθῆτε· ἐγερθήσεται ἔθνος ἐπὶ ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν, σεισμοί τε μεγάλοι κατὰ τόπους καὶ λιμοὶ καὶ λοιμοὶ ἔσονται, φόβητρά τε καὶ σημεῖα ἀπ᾿ οὐρανοῦ μεγάλα ἔσται. ὅταν δὲ ἴδητε κυκλουμένην ὑπὸ στρατοπέδων τὴν Ἱερουσαλήμ, τότε γνῶτε ὅτι ἤγγικεν ἡ ἐρήμωσις αὐτῆς. τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη, καὶ οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν, καὶ οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν, ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσι τοῦ πληρωθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα. οὐαὶ δὲ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις· ἔσται γὰρ τότε ἀνάγκη μεγάλη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὀργὴ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ, καὶ πεσοῦνται στόματι μαχαίρας, καὶ αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἔσται πατουμένη ὑπὸ ἐθνῶν ἄχρι πληρωθῶσι καιροὶ ἐθνῶν.
