Timoteo, hijo mío, esta es la recomendación que yo te hago, de acuerdo con las profecías pronunciadas sobre ti anteriormente. Combate, apoyado en ellas, el buen combate, conservando la fe y la conciencia recta; algunos, por haberla rechazado, naufragaron en la fe; entre éstos están Himeneo y Alejandro, a quienes entregué a Satanás para que aprendiesen a no blasfemar. Quiero, pues, que los hombres oren en todo lugar elevando hacia el cielo unas manos piadosas, sin ira ni discusiones. Así mismo que las mujeres, vestidas decorosamente, se adornen con pudor y modestia, no con trenzas ni con oro o perlas o vestidos costosos, sino con buenas obras, como conviene a mujeres que hacen profesión de piedad. La mujer oiga la instrucción en silencio, con toda sumisión. No permito que la mujer enseñe ni que domine al hombre. Que se mantenga en silencio. Porque Adán fue formado primero y Eva en segundo lugar. Y el engañado no fue Adán, sino la mujer que, seducida, incurrió en la transgresión. Con todo, se salvará por su maternidad mientras persevere con modestia en la fe, en la caridad y en la santidad. [BJ-SAOGM]
Timothy, my son, this charge I commit to you in accordance with the prophetic utterances which pointed to you, that inspired by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith, among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire but by good deeds, as befits women who profess religion. Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through bearing children, if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty. [RSV]
Τέκνον Τιμόθεε, ταύτην τὴν παραγγελίαν παρατίθεμαί σοι, κατὰ τὰς προαγούσας ἐπὶ σὲ προφητείας, ἵνα στρατεύῃ ἐν αὐταῖς τὴν καλὴν στρατείαν, ἔχων πίστιν καὶ ἀγαθὴν συνείδησιν, ἥν τινες ἀπωσάμενοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν ἐναυάγησαν· ὧν ἐστιν Ὑμέναιος καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος, οὓς παρέδωκα τῷ σατανᾷ, ἵνα παιδευθῶσι μὴ βλασφημεῖν. Βούλομαι οὖν προσεύχεσθαι τοὺς ἄνδρας ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ, ἐπαίροντας ὁσίους χεῖρας χωρὶς ὀργῆς καὶ διαλογισμοῦ. ὡσαύτως καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας ἐν καταστολῇ κοσμίῳ, μετὰ αἰδοῦς καὶ σωφροσύνης κοσμεῖν ἑαυτάς, μὴ ἐν πλέγμασιν ἢ χρυσῷ ἢ μαργαρίταις ἢ ἱματισμῷ πολυτελεῖ, ἀλλ᾽ ὃ πρέπει γυναιξὶν ἐπαγγελλομέναις θεοσέβειαν, δι᾽ ἔργων ἀγαθῶν. Γυνὴ ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ μανθανέτω ἐν πάσῃ ὑποταγῇ· γυναικὶ δὲ διδάσκειν οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω, οὐδὲ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρός, ἀλλ᾽ εἶναι ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ. Ἀδὰμ γὰρ πρῶτος ἐπλάσθη, εἶτα Εὔα· καὶ Ἀδὰμ οὐκ ἠπατήθη, ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἀπατηθεῖσα ἐν παραβάσει γέγονε· σωθήσεται δὲ διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας, ἐὰν μείνωσιν ἐν πίστει καὶ ἀγάπῃ καὶ ἁγιασμῷ μετὰ σωφροσύνης.

En aquel tiempo, mientras Jesús enseñaba a la gente en el Templo y anunciaba la Buena Nueva, se acercaron los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas, junto con los ancianos, y le preguntaron: «Dinos: ¿Con qué autoridad haces esto? ¿Quién te ha dado tal autoridad?» Él les respondió: «También yo les voy a preguntar una cosa. Díganme: El bautismo de Juan, ¿era del cielo o de los hombres?» Ellos razonaban entre sí: «Si decimos ‘Del cielo’, nos dirá: ‘¿Por qué no le creyeron?’ Pero si decimos ‘De los hombres’, la gente nos apedreará, pues están convencidos de que Juan era un profeta.» Así que respondieron que no sabían de dónde era. Jesús les dijo entonces: «Pues tampoco yo les digo con qué autoridad hago esto.» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” He answered them, “I also will ask you a question; now tell me, was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” So they answered that they did not know whence it was. And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” [RSV]
Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, διδάσκοντος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ τὸν λαὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ εὐαγγελιζομένου ἐπέστησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς σὺν τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγοντες· εἰπὲ ἡμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς, ἢ τίς ἐστιν ὁ δούς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην; ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· ἐρωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ ἕνα λόγον, καὶ εἴπατέ μοι· τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων; οἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ, διατί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ; ἐὰν δὲ εἴπωμεν, ἐξ ἀνθρώπων, πᾶς ὁ λαὸς καταλιθάσει ἡμᾶς· πεπεισμένος γάρ ἐστιν Ἰωάννην προφήτην εἶναι. καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν μὴ εἰδέναι πόθεν. καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ.
