Hermanos, no queremos que lo ignoren: la tribulación sufrida en Asia nos abrumó hasta el extremo, por encima de nuestras fuerzas, que perdimos la esperanza de conservar la vida. Pues hemos tenido sobre nosotros mismos la sentencia de muerte, para que no pongamos nuestra confianza en nosotros mismos, sino en Dios que resucita a los muertos. Él nos libró de tan mortal peligro, y nos librará; en él esperamos que nos seguirá librando, si colaboran también ustedes con la oración en favor nuestro, para que la gracia obtenida por intervención de muchos sea por muchos agradecida en nuestro nombre. Brethren, we do not want you to be ignorant of the affliction we experienced in Asia; for we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself. Why, we felt that we had received the sentence of death; but that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead; he delivered us from so deadly a peril, and he is delivering us; on him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us in answer to many prayers. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, Jesús entró en Cafarnaún. Un siervo de un centurión, muy querido de éste, se encontraba enfermo y a punto de morir. El centurión, que había oído hablar de Jesús, le envió unos ancianos de los judíos para rogarle que viniera y salvara a su siervo. Cuando éstos llegaron ante Jesús, le suplicaron con insistencia: «Merece que se lo concedas, porque ama a nuestro pueblo y él mismo nos ha edificado la sinagoga.» Jesús se fue con ellos. Estando ya no lejos de la casa, envió el centurión a unos amigos a decirle: «Señor, no te molestes, porque no soy digno de que entres bajo mi techo; por eso ni siquiera me consideré digno de salir a tu encuentro. Mándalo de palabra y quede sano mi criado. Porque también yo, que soy un subalterno, tengo soldados a mis órdenes, y digo a éste ‘Vete’, y va; y a otro ‘Ven’, y viene; y a mi siervo ‘Haz esto’, y lo hace.» Al oír esto, Jesús quedó admirado de él, y volviéndose a la muchedumbre que le seguía, les dijo: «Les aseguro que ni en Israel he encontrado una fe tan grande.» Cuando los enviados volvieron a la casa hallaron al siervo sano. At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum. Now a centurion had a slave who was dear to him, who was sick and at the point of death. When he heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his slave. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he built us our synagogue.” And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude that followed him, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave well. [RSV]
