Hermanos, Dios usa de misericordia con quien quiere, y endurece a quien quiere. Pero me dirás: Entonces ¿de qué se enoja? Pues ¿quién puede resistir a su voluntad? ¡Oh hombre! ¿Quién eres tú para pedir cuentas a Dios? ¿Acaso la vasija dirá al alfarero: por qué me hiciste así. O ¿es que el alfarero no es dueño de hacer de una misma masa objetos para usos nobles y otros para usos despreciables? Pues bien, ¿qué vas a replicar si Dios, queriendo manifestar su ira y dar a conocer su poder, soportó con gran paciencia objetos de ira preparados para la perdición, a fin de dar a conocer la riqueza de su gloria con los objetos de misericordia que de antemano había preparado para gloria: con nosotros, que hemos sido llamados no sólo de entre los judíos sino también de entre los gentiles? Como dice también en Oseas: Llamaré pueblo mío al que no es mi pueblo; y amada mía a la que no es mi amada. Y en el lugar mismo en que se les dijo: Ustedes no son mi pueblo, serán llamados: Hijos del Dios vivo. Isaías también clama en favor de Israel: Aunque los hijos de Israel fueran numerosos como las arenas del mar, sólo un resto será salvo. Porque pronta y perfectamente cumplirá el Señor su palabra sobre la tierra. Y como predijo Isaías: Si el Señor de los ejércitos no nos dejara una descendencia, como Sodoma hubiéramos venido a ser, y semejantes a Gomorra. ¿Qué diremos, pues. Que los gentiles, que no buscaban la justicia, han hallado la justicia —la justicia de la fe—; mientras Israel, buscando una ley de justicia, no llegó a cumplir la ley. ¿Por qué? Porque la buscaba no en la fe sino en las obras. Tropezaron contra la piedra de tropiezo, como dice la Escritura: He aquí que pongo en Sión piedra de tropiezo y roca de escándalo; mas el que crea en él, no será confundido. [BJ-SAOGM]
Brethren, God has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens the heart of whomever he wills. You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” But who are you, a man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me thus?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for beauty and another for menial use? What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory, even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? As indeed he says in Hosea, “Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘my beloved.’” “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’” And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved; for he will finish his work and cut it short in righteousness, because the Lord will make the sentence shortened on the earth.” And as Isaiah predicted, “if the Lord of hosts had not left descendants to us, we would have fared like Sodom and been made like Gomorrah.” What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith; but that Israel who pursued the righteousness which is based on law did not succeed in fulfilling that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it through faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall; and he who believes in him will not be put to shame.” [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, los Doce se acercaron a Jesús y le dijeron: «Despide a la gente para que vayan a los pueblos y aldeas del contorno y busquen alojamiento y comida, porque aquí estamos en un lugar deshabitado.» Él les dijo: «Denles ustedes de comer.» Pero ellos respondieron: «No tenemos más que cinco panes y dos peces, a no ser que vayamos nosotros a comprar alimentos para toda esta gente.» Es que había como cinco mil hombres. Jesús dijo entonces a sus discípulos: «Hagan que se acomoden por grupos de unos cincuenta.» Lo hicieron así y acomodaron a todos. Tomó entonces los cinco panes y los dos peces, y, levantando los ojos al cielo, pronunció sobre ellos la bendición, los partió y se los fue dando a los discípulos para que, a su vez, se los sirvieran a la gente. Comieron todos hasta saciarse, y se recogieron doce canastos con los trozos que les habían sobrado. Una vez él estaba orando a solas y sus discípulos se le acercaron. [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, the twelve came to Jesus and said to him, “Send the crowd away, to go into the villages and country round about, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a lonely place.” But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish — unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in companies, about fifty each.” And they did so, and made them all sit down. And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what was left over, twelve baskets of broken pieces. Now it happened that as he was praying alone his disciples were with him. [RSV]
