Hermanos, espero firmemente no sentirme en modo alguno fracasado. Al contrario, tengo la plena seguridad, ahora como siempre, de que Cristo será glorificado en mi cuerpo, por mi vida o por mi muerte, pues para mí la vida es Cristo, y el morir, una ganancia. Pero si el vivir en el cuerpo significa para mí trabajo fecundo, no sé qué escoger. Me siento apremiado por ambos extremos. Por un lado, desearía partir y estar con Cristo, lo cual, ciertamente, es con mucho lo mejor; mas, por otro, quedarme en el cuerpo es más necesario para ustedes. Con esta convicción, sé que me quedaré y seguiré con todos ustedes para progreso y gozo de su fe, a fin de que tengan por mi causa un nuevo motivo de satisfacción en Cristo Jesús, cuando yo vuelva a estar entre ustedes. Lo que importa es que lleven una conducta digna del Evangelio de Cristo. [BJ-SAOGM]
Brethren, I shall not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ. [RSV]
Ἀδελφοί, ἐν οὐδενὶ αἰσχυνθήσομαι, ἀλλ᾽ ἐν πάσῃ παρρησίᾳ, ὡς πάντοτε, καὶ νῦν μεγαλυνθήσεται Χριστὸς ἐν τῷ σώματί μου εἴτε διὰ ζωῆς εἴτε διὰ θανάτου. Ἐμοὶ γὰρ τὸ ζῆν Χριστὸς καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος. εἰ δὲ τὸ ζῆν ἐν σαρκί, τοῦτό μοι καρπὸς ἔργου, καὶ τί αἱρήσομαι οὐ γνωρίζω. συνέχομαι δὲ ἐκ τῶν δύο, τὴν ἐπιθυμίαν ἔχων εἰς τὸ ἀναλῦσαι καὶ σὺν Χριστῷ εἶναι· πολλῷ γὰρ μᾶλλον κρεῖσσον· τὸ δὲ ἐπιμένειν ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ ἀναγκαιότερον δι᾽ ὑμᾶς. καὶ τοῦτο πεποιθὼς οἶδα ὅτι μενῶ καὶ συμπαραμενῶ πᾶσιν ὑμῖν εἰς τὴν ὑμῶν προκοπὴν καὶ χαρὰν τῆς πίστεως, ἵνα τὸ καύχημα ὑμῶν περισσεύῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐν ἐμοὶ διὰ τῆς ἐμῆς παρουσίας πάλιν πρὸς ὑμᾶς. Μόνον ἀξίως τοῦ εὐαγγελίου τοῦ Χριστοῦ πολιτεύεσθε.

En aquel tiempo, los soldados llegaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, esto es, «Calvario», y le dieron a beber vino mezclado con hiel; pero él, después de probarlo, no quiso beberlo. Una vez que le crucificaron, se repartieron sus vestidos, echando a suertes. Y se quedaron sentados allí para custodiarle. Sobre su cabeza pusieron, por escrito, la causa de su condena: «Este es Jesús, el Rey de los judíos.» Y al mismo tiempo que a él crucifican a dos salteadores, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda. Los que pasaban por allí le insultaban, meneando la cabeza y diciendo: «Tú que destruyes el Santuario y en tres días lo levantas, ¡sálvate a ti mismo, si eres Hijo de Dios, y baja de la cruz!» Igualmente los sumos sacerdotes junto con los escribas y los ancianos se burlaban de él diciendo: «A otros salvó y a sí mismo no puede salvarse. Rey de Israel es: que baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él. Ha puesto su confianza en Dios; que le salve ahora, si es que de verdad le quiere; ya que dijo: “Soy Hijo de Dios.”» De la misma manera le injuriaban también los salteadores crucificados con él. Desde la hora sexta hubo oscuridad sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora nona. Y alrededor de la hora nona clamó Jesús con fuerte voz: = «¡Elí, Elí! ¿lemá sabactaní?», esto es: «¡Dios mío, Dios mío! ¿por qué me has abandonado?» Al oírlo algunos de los que estaban allí decían: «A Elías llama éste.» Y enseguida uno de ellos fue corriendo a tomar una esponja, la empapó en vinagre y, sujetándola a una caña, le ofrecía de beber. Pero los otros dijeron: «Deja, vamos a ver si viene Elías a salvarle.» Pero Jesús, dando de nuevo un fuerte grito, exhaló el espíritu. En esto, el velo del Santuario se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo; tembló la tierra y las rocas se hendieron. Se abrieron los sepulcros, y muchos cuerpos de santos difuntos resucitaron. Y, saliendo de los sepulcros después de la resurrección de él, entraron en la Ciudad Santa y se aparecieron a muchos. Por su parte, el centurión y los que con él estaban guardando a Jesús, al ver el terremoto y lo que pasaba, se llenaron de miedo y dijeron: «Verdaderamente éste era Hijo de Dios.» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, when the soldiers came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull), they offered Jesus wine to drink, mingled with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots; then they sat down and kept watch over him there. And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus the King of the Jews.” Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “This man is calling Elijah.” And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks were split; the tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe, and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” [RSV]

Τότε σταυροῦνται σὺν αὐτῷ δύο λῃσταί, εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων. Οἱ δὲ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες· ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις οἰκοδομῶν! σῶσον σεαυτόν· εἰ υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ Θεοῦ, κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ. ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων καὶ Φαρισαίων ἔλεγον· ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι· εἰ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστι, καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ· πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τὸν Θεόν, ῥυσάσθω νῦν αὐτόν, εἰ θέλει αὐτόν· εἶπε γὰρ ὅτι Θεοῦ εἰμι υἱός. τὸ δ᾿ αὐτὸ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ συσταυρωθέντες αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν. Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας σκότος ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης. περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ἀνεβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων· ἠλὶ ἠλί, λιμᾶ σαβαχθανί; τοῦτ᾿ ἔστι, Θεέ μου Θεέ μου, ἱνατί με ἐγκατέλιπες; τινὲς δὲ τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστώτων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ οὗτος. καὶ εὐθέως δραμὼν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ λαβὼν σπόγγον πλήσας τε ὄξους καὶ περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν. οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ἔλεγον· ἄφες ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας σώσων αὐτόν. ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀφῆκε τὸ πνεῦμα. Καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπὸ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω, καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐσείσθη καὶ αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν, καὶ τὰ μνημεῖα ἀνεῴχθησαν καὶ πολλὰ σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων ἁγίων ἠγέρθη, καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκ τῶν μνημείων, μετὰ τὴν ἔγερσιν αὐτοῦ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καὶ ἐνεφανίσθησαν πολλοῖς. Ὁ δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος καὶ οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν, ἰδόντες τὸν σεισμὸν καὶ τὰ γενόμενα ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα λέγοντες· ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ υἱὸς ἦν οὗτος.
