Hermanos, quiero que sepan que lo que me ha sucedido ha contribuido más bien al progreso del Evangelio, pues se ha hecho público, en todo el Pretorio y entre todos los demás, que me encuentro encarcelado por Cristo. Así, la mayor parte de los hermanos, alentados en el Señor por mis cadenas, tienen mayor intrepidez en anunciar sin temor la palabra. Es cierto que algunos predican a Cristo por envidia y rivalidad; pero hay también otros que lo hacen con buena intención. Éstos actúan por amor, sabiendo que estoy puesto para defender el Evangelio; aquéllos, por rivalidad, no con puras intenciones, pensando que así añaden sufrimiento a mis cadenas. ¿Y qué? Al fin y al cabo, con hipocresía o con sinceridad, Cristo es anunciado, y esto me alegra y seguirá alegrándome. Yo sé que esto servirá para mi salvación, gracias a sus oraciones y a la ayuda prestada por el Espíritu de Jesús Cristo, pues espero firmemente no sentirme en modo alguno fracasado. [BJ-SAOGM]
Brethren, I want you to know that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole praetorium and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ; and most of the brethren have been made confident in the Lord because of my imprisonment, and are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel; the former proclaim Christ out of partisanship, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I shall rejoice. For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, Jesús subió a una barca con sus discípulos y les dijo: «Pasemos a la otra orilla del lago.» Y se hicieron a la mar. Mientras ellos navegaban, se quedó dormido. Se abatió entonces sobre el lago una borrasca tal que la barca se anegaba y estaban en peligro. Ellos, acercándose, le despertaron: «¡Maestro, Maestro, nos hundimos!» Él, habiéndose despertado, increpó al viento y al oleaje, que amainaron y sobrevino la bonanza. Entonces les dijo: «¿Dónde está su fe?» Ellos, llenos de temor, se decían entre sí maravillados: «¿Quién es éste, que conmina a los vientos y al agua, y le obedecen?» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, Jesus got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even wind and water, and they obey him?” [RSV]
