Only-begotten Son and Logos of God, being immortal, You condescended for our salvation to take flesh from the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary and, without change, became man. Hermanos, supongamos ahora, que, cuando yo vaya a visitarlos, empiece a hablar en lenguas. ¿Cómo podría serles útil, si mi palabra no fuese acompañada de revelación, ciencia, profecía o enseñanza? Así sucede con los instrumentos musicales inanimados, como la flauta o la cítara. Si no tuvieran sonidos diferenciados, ¿cómo se sabría que está sonando una flauta o una cítara? Y si la trompeta sólo emitiese un sonido confuso, ¿quién se prepararía para la batalla? Pues lo mismo ustedes: si al hablar no pronuncian palabras inteligibles, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que dicen? Es como si hablaran al viento. En el mundo hay una gran variedad de lenguas, y ninguna carece de sentido. Pero si desconozco el sentido de una lengua, seré un extranjero para el que me habla; y el que me habla, un extranjero para mí. Así pues, ya que aspiran a los dones espirituales, procuren abundar en ellos, para que la asamblea vaya creciendo en la fe. Por tanto, si alguien habla en lenguas, que pida el don de interpretarlas. Porque si rezo en lenguas, mi espíritu reza, pero mi mente queda sin fruto. Entonces, ¿qué hacer? Rezaré con el espíritu, pero rezaré también con la mente. Cantaré salmos con el espíritu, pero también los cantaré con la mente. Porque, si sólo alabas con el espíritu, ¿cómo dirá «amén» a tu acción de gracias el que ocupa el lugar del simple fiel, si no sabe lo que dices? Tu acción de gracias podrá ser excelente, pero al otro no le sirve para crecer en la fe. Doy gracias a Dios porque hablo en lenguas más que todos ustedes, pero en la asamblea prefiero decir cinco palabras con sentido, para instruir a los demás, que diez mil en lenguas. [BJ-SAOGM]
Brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how shall I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will any one know what is played? And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? So with yourselves; if you in a tongue utter speech that is not intelligible, how will any one know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning; but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. So with yourselves; since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. What am I to do? I will pray with spirit and I will sing with the mind also. Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how can any one in the position of an outsider say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? For you may give thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo: Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y los llevó a ellos solos aparte, a un monte alto. Y se transfiguró delante de ellos: sus vestidos se volvieron resplandecientes, muy blancos, tanto que ningún batanero en la tierra sería capaz de blanquearlos de ese modo. Se les aparecieron Elías y Moisés, que conversaban con Jesús. Tomó Pedro la palabra y dijo a Jesús: «Rabbí, está bien que nos quedemos aquí. Vamos a hacer tres tiendas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías» —es que no sabía qué responder, pues estaban atemorizados—. Entonces se formó una nube que los cubrió con su sombra, y llegó una voz desde la nube: «Éste es mi Hijo amado; escúchenle.» Al momento miraron en derredor y ya no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús con ellos. Cuando bajaban del monte les ordenó que a nadie contasen lo que habían visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre resucitara de entre los muertos. [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves; and he was transfigured before them, and his garments became glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses; and they were talking to Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were exceedingly afraid. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of man should have risen from the dead. [RSV]

Digno es, en verdad, aclamarte a ti, Theotokos, la siempre bienaventurada e inmaculada, y Madre de nuestro Dios. A la más honorable que los querubines y más gloriosa, incomparablemente que los serafines; a ti, la que incorruptamente, diste a luz al Verbo de Dios, a la verdaderamente Theotokos, te exaltamos.
It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.
