Hermanos, la mayoría de nuestros antepasados no fue del agrado de Dios, pues sus cuerpos quedaron tendidos en el desierto. Estas cosas sucedieron para que nos sirvieran de ejemplo y no codiciemos lo malo, como ellos hicieron. No se hagan idólatras, como algunos de ellos, conforme dice la Escritura: ‘Se sentó el pueblo a comer y a beber y se levantó a divertirse’. Tampoco forniquemos, como algunos de ellos, pues su conducta hizo que cayeran muertos veintitrés mil en un solo día. Ni tentemos al Señor, como algunos de ellos, por lo que perecieron víctimas de las serpientes. Ni murmuren, como algunos de ellos, que perecieron bajo el exterminador. Todo esto les acontecía en figura, y fue escrito para aviso de los que hemos llegado a la plenitud de los tiempos. Así pues, el que crea estar en pie, mire no caiga. [BJ-SAOGM]
Brethren, God was not pleased with most of the fathers; for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things are warnings for us, not to desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to dance.” We must not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents; nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as a warning, but they were written down for our instruction, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let any one who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. [RSV]

Dijo el Señor a sus discípulos: «Abran los ojos y guárdense de la levadura de los fariseos y saduceos.» Ellos comentaban entre sí: «Será porque no hemos traído panes.» Mas Jesús, dándose cuenta, dijo: «Hombres de poca fe, ¿por qué están hablando entre ustedes de que no tienen panes? ¿Aún no comprenden, ni se acuerdan de los cinco panes de los cinco mil hombres, y cuántos canastos recogieron? ¿Ni de los siete panes de los cuatro mil, y cuántas espuertas recogieron? ¿Cómo no comprenden que no me refería a los panes? Guárdense, sí, de la levadura de los fariseos y saduceos.» Entonces entendieron que no había querido decir que se guardasen de la levadura de los panes, sino de la doctrina de los fariseos y saduceos. The Lord said to his disciples, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” But Jesus, aware of this, said. “O men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? How is it that you fail to perceive that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. [RSV]
