Hermanos, si un hermano tiene una mujer no creyente y ella consiente en vivir con él, que no se divorcie de ella; y si una mujer tiene un marido no creyente que consiente en vivir con ella, que no se divorcie. Pues el marido no creyente queda santificado por su mujer, y la mujer no creyente queda santificada por el marido creyente. De otro modo, sus hijos serían impuros, mas ahora son santos. Pero si la parte no creyente quiere separarse, que se separe; en ese caso, el hermano o la hermana no están obligados. Dios los ha llamado para vivir en paz. Pues, ¿qué sabes tú, mujer, si salvarás a tu marido? ¿Y qué sabes tú, marido, si salvarás a tu mujer? Por lo demás, que cada cual viva conforme le asignó el Señor, cada cual como le haya llamado Dios. Es lo que ordeno en todas las iglesias. ¿Que uno fue llamado siendo circunciso? Que no lo disimule. ¿Que fue llamado siendo incircunciso? Que no se circuncide. La circuncisión no es nada, y nada la incircuncisión; lo que importa es el cumplimiento de los mandamientos de Dios. Que permanezca cada cual en el estado en que se hallaba cuando Dios lo llamó. ¿Eras esclavo cuando fuiste llamado? No te preocupes. Y, aunque puedas conseguir la libertad, aprovecha más bien tu condición de esclavo. Pues el que recibió la llamada del Señor siendo esclavo, es un liberto del Señor; igualmente, el que era libre cuando recibió la llamada, es un esclavo de Cristo. ¡Han sido bien comprados! No se hagan esclavos de los hombres. Hermanos, permanezca cada cual ante Dios en el estado en que fue llamado. [BJ-SAOGM]
Brethren, if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is consecrated through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is consecrated through her husband. Otherwise, your children would be unclean, but as it is they are holy. But if the unbelieving partner desires to separate, let it be so; in such a case the brother or sister is not bound. For God has called us to peace. Wife, how do you know whether you will save your husband? Husband, how do you know whether you will save your wife? Only, let every one lead the life which the Lord has assigned to him, and in which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. Was any one at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was any one at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. Every one should remain in the state in which he was called. Were you a slave when called? Never mind. But if you can gain your freedom, make use of your present condition instead. For he who was called in the Lord as a slave is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a slave of Christ. You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. So, brethren, in whatever state each was called, there let him remain with God. En aquel tiempo, los hombres de Genesaret, apenas reconocieron a Jesús, pregonaron la noticia por toda aquella región y le presentaron todos los enfermos. Le pedían que tocaran siquiera el borde de su manto; y cuantos lo tocaron quedaron salvados. Entonces se acercan a Jesús algunos fariseos y escribas venidos de Jerusalén, y le dicen: «¿Por qué tus discípulos incumplen la tradición de los antepasados? Pues no se lavan las manos a la hora de comer.» Él les respondió: «Y ustedes, ¿por qué incumplen el mandamiento de Dios por su tradición? Porque Dios dijo: Honra a tu padre y a tu madre, y: El que maldiga a su padre o a su madre, sea castigado con la muerte. Pero ustedes dicen: El que diga a su padre o a su madre: ‘Lo que de mí podrías recibir como ayuda es ofrenda’, ése no tendrá que honrar a su padre y a su madre. Así han anulado la palabra de Dios por su tradición. Hipócritas, bien profetizó de ustedes Isaías cuando dijo: Este pueblo me honra con los labios, pero su corazón está lejos de mí. En vano me rinden culto, ya que enseñan doctrinas que son preceptos humanos.» Luego llamó a la gente y les dijo: «Escuchen y entiendan. No es lo que entra en la boca lo que contamina al hombre; sino lo que sale de la boca, eso es lo que contamina al hombre.» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, when the men of Gennesaret recognized Jesus, they sent round to all that region and brought to him all that were sick, and besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many touched it were made well. Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, “Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them, “And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’ But you say, ‘If any one tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is an offering, he need not honor his father or mother.’ So, for the sake of your tradition, you have made void the commandment of God. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’” And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” [RSV]
