Por aquellos días, los atenienses tomaron a Pablo y le llevaron al Areópago; y le dijeron: «¿Podemos saber cuál es esa nueva doctrina que tú expones? Pues te oímos decir cosas extrañas y querríamos saber qué es lo que significan.» Todos los atenienses y los forasteros que allí residían en ninguna otra cosa pasaban el tiempo sino en decir u oír la última novedad. Pablo, de pie en medio del Areópago, dijo: «Atenienses, veo que ustedes son, por todos los conceptos, los más respetuosos de la divinidad. Pues al pasar y contemplar sus monumentos sagrados, he encontrado también un altar en el que estaba grabada esta inscripción: ‘Al Dios desconocido.’ Pues bien, lo que adoran sin conocer, eso les vengo yo a anunciar. El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que hay en él, que es Señor del cielo y de la tierra, no habita en santuarios fabricados por mano de hombres; ni es servido por manos humanas, como si de algo estuviera necesitado, el que a todos da la vida, el aliento y todas las cosas. Él creó, de un solo principio, todo el linaje humano, para que habitara sobre toda la faz de la tierra fijando los tiempos determinados y los límites del lugar donde habían de habitar. con el fin de que buscaran la divinidad, para ver si a tientas la buscaban y la hallaban; por más que no se encuentra lejos de cada uno de nosotros; pues en él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos.» [BJ-SAOGM]
In those days, the Athenians took hold of Paul and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is which you present? For you bring some strange things to our ears; we wish to know therefore what these things mean.” Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. So Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything. And from one blood he made every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation, that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.’” [RSV]
Ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις, ἐπιλαβόμενοι οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι τοῦ Παύλου ἐπὶ τὸν Ἄρειον πάγον ἤγαγον λέγοντες· δυνάμεθα γνῶναι τίς ἡ καινὴ αὕτη ἡ ὑπὸ σοῦ λαλουμένη διδαχή; ξενίζοντα γάρ τινα εἰσφέρεις εἰς τὰς ἀκοὰς ἡμῶν· βουλόμεθα οὖν γνῶναι τί ἂν θέλοι ταῦτα εἶναι. Ἀθηναῖοι δὲ πάντες καὶ οἱ ἐπιδημοῦντες ξένοι εἰς οὐδὲν ἕτερον εὐκαίρουν ἢ λέγειν τι καὶ ἀκούειν καινότερον. Σταθεὶς δὲ ὁ Παῦλος ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ Ἀρείου πάγου ἔφη· ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, κατὰ πάντα ὡς δεισιδαιμονεστέρους ὑμᾶς θεωρῶ. διερχόμενος γὰρ καὶ ἀναθεωρῶν τὰ σεβάσματα ὑμῶν εὗρον καὶ βωμὸν ἐν ᾧ ἐπεγέγραπτο, ἀγνώστῳ Θεῷ. ὃν οὖν ἀγνοοῦντες εὐσεβεῖτε, τοῦτον ἐγὼ καταγγέλλω ὑμῖν. ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ποιήσας τὸν κόσμον καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτῷ, οὗτος οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς Κύριος ὑπάρχων οὐκ ἐν χειροποιήτοις ναοῖς κατοικεῖ, οὐδὲ ὑπὸ χειρῶν ἀνθρώπων θεραπεύεται προσδεόμενός τινος, αὐτὸς διδοὺς πᾶσι ζωὴν καὶ πνοὴν κατὰ πάντα· ἐποίησέ τε ἐξ ἑνὸς αἵματος πᾶν ἔθνος ἀνθρώπων κατοικεῖν ἐπὶ πᾶν τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς, ὁρίσας προστεταγμένους καιροὺς καὶ τὰς ὁροθεσίας τῆς κατοικίας αὐτῶν, ζητεῖν τὸν Κύριον, εἰ ἄρα γε ψηλαφήσειαν αὐτὸν καὶ εὕροιεν, καί γε οὐ μακρὰν ἀπὸ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου ἡμῶν ὑπάρχοντα. ἐν αὐτῷ γὰρ ζῶμεν καὶ κινούμεθα καὶ ἐσμέν, ὡς καί τινες τῶν καθ᾿ ὑμᾶς ποιητῶν εἰρήκασι· τοῦ γὰρ καὶ γένος ἐσμέν.

En aquel tiempo, los fariseos se confabularon contra Jesús y se dijeron entre sí: «¿Ven cómo no adelantan nada?; todo el mundo se ha ido tras él.» Entre los que subían a adorar en la fiesta había algunos griegos. Éstos se dirigieron a Felipe, el de Betsaida de Galilea, y le rogaron: «Señor, queremos ver a Jesús.» Felipe fue a decírselo a Andrés; Andrés y Felipe fueron a comunicárselo a Jesús. Jesús les respondió: «Ha llegado la hora de que el Hijo de hombre sea glorificado. En verdad, en verdad les digo que si el grano de trigo no cae en tierra y muere, allí queda, él solo; pero si muere, da mucho fruto. El que ama su vida, la perderá; pero el que odia su vida en este mundo la guardará para una vida eterna. Si alguno me sirve, que me siga, y donde yo esté, allí estará también mi servidor. Si alguno me sirve, el Padre le honrará. Ahora mi alma está turbada. Y ¿que voy a decir? ¡Padre, líbrame de esta hora! Pero ¡si he llegado a esta hora precisamente para esto! Padre, glorifica tu Nombre». Vino entonces una voz del cielo: «Lo he glorificado y de nuevo lo glorificaré». La gente que estaba allí y lo oyó decía que había sido un trueno. Otros decían: «Le ha hablado un ángel.» Jesús respondió: «No ha venido esta voz por mí, sino por ustedes. Ahora es el juicio de este mundo; ahora el Príncipe de este mundo será derribado. Y cuando yo sea elevado de la tierra, atraeré a todos hacia mí.» Decía esto para dar a entender qué tipo de muerte le iban a aplicar. La gente le respondió: «Nosotros sabemos por la Ley que el Cristo permanecerá para siempre. ¿Cómo dices tú que es preciso que el Hijo del hombre sea elevado? ¿Quién es ese Hijo del hombre?» Jesús les dijo: «Todavía, por un poco de tiempo, estará la luz entre ustedes. Caminen mientras tienen la luz, para que no le sorprendan las tinieblas; el que camina en tinieblas no sabe a dónde va. Mientras tienen la luz, crean en la luz, para que sean hijos de luz.» [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, the Pharisees took counsel against Jesus and said to one another, “You see that you can do nothing; look, the world has gone after him.” Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him. Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour?’ No, for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing by heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” He said this to show by what death he was to die. The crowd answered him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains for ever. How can you say that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?” Jesus said to them, “The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” [RSV]
Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ συμβούλιον ἔποίησαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ εἶπον πρὸς ἑαυτούς· θεωρεῖτε ὅτι οὐκ ὠφελεῖτε οὐδέν; ἴδε ὁ κόσμος ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθεν. Ἦσαν δέ τινες Ἕλληνες ἐκ τῶν ἀναβαινόντων ἵνα προσκυνήσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ. οὗτοι οὖν προσῆλθον Φιλίππῳ τῷ ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, καὶ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες· κύριε, θέλομεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδεῖν. ἔρχεται Φίλιππος καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἀνδρέᾳ, καὶ πάλιν Ἀνδρέας καὶ Φίλιππος λέγουσι τῷ Ἰησοῦ· ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτοῖς λέγων· ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρα ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐὰν μὴ ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σίτου πεσὼν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἀποθάνῃ, αὐτὸς μόνος μένει· ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ, πολὺν καρπὸν φέρει. ὁ φιλῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν, καὶ ὁ μισῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ τούτῳ, εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον φυλάξει αὐτήν. ἐὰν ἐμοὶ διακονῇ τις, ἐμοὶ ἀκολουθείτω, καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγώ, ἐκεῖ καὶ ὁ διάκονος ὁ ἐμὸς ἔσται· καὶ ἐάν τις ἐμοὶ διακονῇ, τιμήσει αὐτὸν ὁ πατήρ. Νῦν ἡ ψυχή μου τετάρακται, καὶ τί εἴπω; πάτερ, σῶσον με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης. ἀλλὰ διά τοῦτο ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην. πάτερ, δόξασόν σου τὸ ὄνομα. ἦλθεν οὖν φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· καὶ ἐδόξασα καὶ πάλιν δοξάσω. ὁ οὖν ὄχλος ὁ ἑστὼς καὶ ἀκούσας ἔλεγε βροντὴν γεγονέναι· ἄλλοι ἔλεγον· ἄγγελος αὐτῷ λελάληκεν. ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν· οὐ δι᾽ ἐμὲ αὕτη ἡ φωνὴ γέγονεν, ἀλλὰ δι᾽ ὑμᾶς. νῦν κρίσις ἐστὶ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου, νῦν ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐκβληθήσεται ἔξω· κἀγὼ ἐὰν ὑψωθῶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς, πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν. τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγε σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνήσκειν. ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος· ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, καὶ πῶς σὺ λέγεις, δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἔτι μικρὸν χρόνον τὸ φῶς μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν ἐστι· περιπατεῖτε ἕως τὸ φῶς ἔχετε, ἵνα μὴ σκοτία ὑμᾶς καταλάβῃ· καὶ ὁ περιπατῶν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ οὐκ οἶδε ποῦ ὑπάγει. ἕως τὸ φῶς ἔχετε, πιστεύετε εἰς τὸ φῶς, ἵνα υἱοὶ φωτὸς γένησθε.
