Lectura de la segunda carta de san Pablo a los Corintios.

2 Cor. 4:1 – 12

Por esto, investidos de este ministerio por la misericordia de Dios, no desfallecemos. Antes bien, hemos repudiado el silencio vergonzoso, evitando proceder con astucia o falsear la palabra de Dios; al contrario, al manifestar la verdad, nos recomendamos a toda conciencia humana delante de Dios. Y si todavía se piensa que nuestro Evangelio está velado, lo está para los que se pierden, para los incrédulos. El dios de este mundo cegó a éstos su entendimiento, para impedir que vean el resplandor del glorioso Evangelio de Cristo, que es imagen de Dios. No nos predicamos a nosotros mismos, sino a Cristo Jesús como Señor, y a nosotros como siervos de ustedes por Jesús. Pues el mismo Dios que dijo ‘Del seno de las tinieblas brille la luz’ la ha hecho brillar en nuestras mentes, para iluminarnos con el conocimiento de la gloria de Dios, que brilla en el rostro de Cristo. Pero llevamos este tesoro en recipientes de barro, para que se vea claramente que una fuerza tan extraordinaria es de Dios y no de nosotros. Vivimos siempre apretados, pero no aplastados; apurados, pero no desesperados; perseguidos, pero no abandonados; derribados, pero no rematados. Llevamos siempre en nuestros cuerpos, por todas partes, la muerte de Jesús, a fin de que también la vida de Jesús se manifieste en nuestro cuerpo. Pues, aunque vivimos, nos vemos continuamente expuestos a la muerte por causa de Jesús, a fin de que también la vida de Jesús se manifieste en nuestra carne mortal. De modo que la muerte actúa en nosotros, pero en ustedes la vida. [BJ-SAOGM]

Brethren, having this ministry as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart. We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways; we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of truth we would commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, llegó Jesús a un pueblo de Samaría llamado Sicar, cerca de la heredad que Jacob legó a su hijo José. Allí estaba el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, que estaba cansado de tanto andar, se había sentado junto al pozo. Era alrededor de la hora sexta. Llegó entonces una mujer de Samaría a sacar agua. Jesús le dijo: «Dame de beber.» (Sus discípulos se habían ido al pueblo a comprar comida.) La samaritana le respondió: «¿Cómo tú, siendo judío, me pides de beber a mí, que soy una mujer de Samaría?» (Es que los judíos no se tratan con los samaritanos.) Jesús le respondió: «Si conocieras el don de Dios y supieras quién es el que te dice ‘Dame de beber’, tú se lo habrías pedido a él, y él te habría dado agua viva.» Contestó la mujer: «Señor, el pozo es hondo y no tienes con qué sacarla; ¿cómo es que tienes esa agua viva? ¿Te crees más que nuestro padre Jacob, que nos dio el pozo, del que bebieron él, sus hijos y sus ganados?» Jesús le respondió: «Todo el que beba de esta agua volverá a tener sed; pero el que beba del agua que yo le dé no tendrá sed jamás, pues el agua que yo le dé se convertirá en él en fuente de agua que brota para vida eterna.» Le dijo la mujer: «Señor, dame de esa agua, para no volver a tener sed y no tener que venir aquí a sacarla.» Él le contestó: «Vete, llama a tu marido y vuelve acá.» La mujer le dijo: «No tengo marido.» Jesús le respondió: «Bien has dicho que no tienes marido, porque has tenido cinco, y el que ahora tienes no es marido tuyo. En eso has dicho la verdad.» La mujer replicó: «Señor, veo que eres un profeta. Nuestros padres adoraron en este monte, pero vosotros decís que el lugar donde se debe adorar es Jerusalén.» Jesús le contestó: «Créeme, mujer, que llega la hora en que ni en este monte ni en Jerusalén adoraréis al Padre. Vosotros adoráis lo que no conocéis; nosotros adoramos lo que conocemos, porque la salvación viene de los judíos. Pero llega la hora (ya estamos en ella) en que los adoradores verdaderos adorarán al Padre en espíritu y en verdad, porque así quiere el Padre que sean los que le adoren. Dios es espíritu, y los que adoran deben adorar en espíritu y verdad.» Le dijo la mujer: «Sé que va a venir el Mesías, el llamado Cristo. Cuando venga, nos lo desvelará todo.» Jesús le respondió: «Yo soy, el que está hablando contigo.» En esto llegaron sus discípulos y se sorprendieron de que hablara con una mujer. Pero nadie le preguntó qué quería o qué hablaba con ella. La mujer, dejando su cántaro, corrió al pueblo y dijo a la gente: «Vengan a ver a un hombre que me ha dicho todo lo que he hecho. ¿No será el Cristo?» Salieron del pueblo y se encaminaron hacia él. Entretanto, los discípulos le insistían: «Rabbí, come.» Pero él replicó: «Yo tengo para comer un alimento que ustedes no saben.» Los discípulos se decían entre sí: «¿Le habrá traído alguien de comer?» Jesús les dijo: «Mi alimento es hacer la voluntad del que me ha enviado y llevar a cabo su obra. ¿No dicen ustedes: ‘Cuatro meses más y llega la siega’? Pues bien, yo les digo: Alcen sus ojos y vean los campos, que amarillean ya para la siega. Ya el segador recibe el salario, y recoge fruto para vida eterna, de modo que el sembrador se alegra igual que el segador. Y en esto resulta verdadero el refrán de que uno es el sembrador y otro el segador: yo les he enviado a segar donde ustedes no se han fatigado. Otros se fatigaron y ustedes se aprovechan de su fatiga.» Muchos samaritanos de aquel pueblo creyeron en él por las palabras de la mujer, que atestiguaba: «Me ha dicho todo lo que he hecho.» Cuando llegaron a él los samaritanos, le rogaron que se quedara con ellos. Y Jesús se quedó allí dos días. Fueron muchos más los que creyeron por sus palabras, y decían a la mujer: «Ya no creemos por tus palabras, pues nosotros mismos hemos oído y sabemos que éste es verdaderamente el Salvador del mundo.» [BJ-SAOGM]

At that time, Jesus came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.” Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, “What do you wish?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” They went out of the city and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples besought him, saying “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him food?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony. “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard ourselves, and we know that this is indeed Christ the Savior of the world.” [RSV]
