Queridos, si alguno dice: «Yo amo a Dios», y a la vez odia a su hermano, es un mentiroso; pues quien no ama a su hermano, a quien ve, no puede amar a Dios, a quien no ve. Y nosotros hemos recibido de él este mandamiento: quien ama a Dios, ame también a su hermano. Todo el que cree que Jesús es el Cristo ha nacido de Dios; y todo el que ama a aquel que da el ser amará también al que ha nacido de él. En esto podemos conocer que amamos a los hijos de Dios: si amamos a Dios y cumplimos sus mandamientos. Pues el amor a Dios consiste en guardar sus mandamientos. Y sus mandamientos no son pesados, pues todo lo que nace de Dios vence al mundo. Y la fuerza que vence al mundo es nuestra fe. ¿Quién es el que vence al mundo sino el que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios? Jesús Cristo fue el que vino con agua y con sangre; no solamente con el agua, sino con el agua y con la sangre. Y el Espíritu da testimonio de ello, porque el Espíritu es la Verdad. Tres son los que dan testimonio: el Espíritu, el agua y la sangre, y los tres convergen en lo mismo. Si somos capaces de aceptar el testimonio de los hombres, mayor es el testimonio de Dios. Y éste es el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo. Quien cree en el Hijo de Dios posee el testimonio dentro de sí; pero quien no cree a Dios le deja por mentiroso, porque no ha creído en el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo. Y éste es el testimonio: que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna y esta vida está en su Hijo. Quien tiene al Hijo, tiene la Vida; quien no tiene al Hijo de Dios no tiene la Vida. Les he escrito estas cosas a los que creen en el Hijo de Dios, para que se den cuenta de que tienen Vida eterna. Ésta es la confianza plena que tenemos en él: que si le pedimos algo conforme a su voluntad, seguro que nos escucha. Y si sabemos que él escucha todo cuanto le pedimos, también sabemos que tenemos conseguido todo lo que hayamos pedido. Si alguno ve que su hermano comete algún pecado que no conduce a la muerte, que pida, y Dios le dará vida —esto a los que cometan pecados que no conducen a la muerte, pues hay un pecado de muerte; por ése no digo que pida—. Toda iniquidad es pecado, pero hay pecados que no conducen a la muerte. Sabemos que quien ha nacido de Dios no peca, pues lo protege el Engendrado de Dios, y el Maligno no lo toca. Sabemos que somos de Dios y que el mundo entero está sometido al poder del Maligno. Pero sabemos que el Hijo de Dios ha venido y nos ha dado inteligencia para conocer al Verdadero. Nosotros estamos en el Verdadero, en su Hijo Jesús Cristo. Éste es el Dios verdadero y la Vida eterna. Hijos míos, guárdense de los ídolos. Amén. [BJ-SAOGM]
Beloved, if any one says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should love his brother also. Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. There are three that testify in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. And there are three that testify on earth, the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has borne witness to his Son. He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne to his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life. I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life and that you may believe in the name of the Son of God. And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal. We know that any one born of God does not sin, but he who was born of God protects himself, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, prepararon una reunión los sumos sacerdotes con los ancianos, los escribas y todo el Sanedrín. Y, después de haber atado a Jesús, lo llevaron y lo entregaron a Pilato. Pilato le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?» Él le respondió: «Sí, tú lo dices.» Los sumos sacerdotes le acusaban de muchas cosas. Pilato volvió a preguntarle: «¿No contestas nada? Mira de cuántas cosas te acusan.» Pero Jesús no respondió ya nada, de suerte que Pilato estaba sorprendido. Cada Fiesta les concedía la libertad de un preso, el que pidieran. Había uno, llamado Barrabás, que estaba encarcelado con aquellos sediciosos que en el motín habían cometido un asesinato. Subió la gente y se puso a pedir lo que les solía conceder. Pilato les contestó: «¿Quieren que les suelte al rey de los judíos?» (pues se daba cuenta de que los sumos sacerdotes lo habían entregado por envidia). Pero los sumos sacerdotes incitaron a la gente a que pidiesen más bien la libertad de Barrabás. Pilato insistió: «¿Y qué voy a hacer con el que llaman el rey de los judíos?» La gente volvió a gritar: «¡Crucifícalo!» Pilato les dijo: «Pero ¿qué mal ha hecho?» Mas ellos gritaron con más fuerza: «¡Crucifícalo!» Pilato, entonces, queriendo complacer a la gente, les soltó a Barrabás. Y a Jesús, después de azotarle, lo entregó para que fuera crucificado. [BJ-SAOGM]
At that time, the chief priests, with the elders, and scribes and the whole council held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate wondered. Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he was wont to do for them. And he answered them, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
