Hermanos, quien ha nacido de Dios no peca, porque su germen mora en él; es decir, no puede pecar porque ha nacido de Dios. En esto se reconocen los hijos de Dios y los hijos del diablo: quien no hace lo que es justo no es de Dios, y quien no ama a su hermano, tampoco. Segunda condición: guardar los mandamientos, sobre todo el de la caridad. Pues éste es el mensaje que oyeron desde el principio: que nos amemos unos a otros. No como Caín, que, al ser del Maligno, mató a su hermano. ¿Y por qué lo mató? Porque sus obras eran malas, mientras que eran justas las obras de su hermano. No se extrañen, hermanos, si el mundo los aborrece. Nosotros sabemos que hemos pasado de la muerte a la vida, porque amamos a los hermanos. Quien no ama está instalado en la muerte. Todo el que odia a su hermano es un asesino; y saben que ningún asesino posee vida eterna en sí mismo. En una cosa hemos conocido qué es el amor: en que él dio su vida por nosotros. Así que también nosotros debemos dar la vida por los hermanos. Si alguno que posee bienes materiales ve que su hermano está necesitado y le cierra sus entrañas, ¿cómo puede residir en él el amor de Dios? Hijos míos, no amemos de palabra, sólo con la boca, sino con obras y según la verdad. En esto sabremos que somos de la verdad, y tendremos nuestra conciencia tranquila ante él, aunque nuestra conciencia nos condene, pues Dios, que lo sabe todo, está por encima de nuestra conciencia. Queridos, si la conciencia no nos condena, tenemos confianza total en Dios, y obtendremos de él todo lo que le pidamos. [BJ-SAOGM]

Brethren, no one born of God commits sin; for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother. For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, and not be like Cain who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But if any one has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask. [RSV]

Ἀδελφοί, πᾶς ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἁμαρτίαν οὐ ποιεῖ, ὅτι σπέρμα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ μένει· καὶ οὐ δύναται ἁμαρτάνειν, ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ γεγέννηται. ἐν τούτῳ φανερά ἐστι τὰ τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ διαβόλου. πᾶς ὁ μὴ ποιῶν δικαιοσύνην οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ. ὅτι αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἀγγελία ἣν ἠκούσατε ἀπ᾿ ἀρχῆς, ἵνα ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους, οὐ καθὼς Κάϊν ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ἦν καὶ ἔσφαξε τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ· καὶ χάριν τίνος ἔσφαξεν αὐτόν; ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρὰ ἦν, τὰ δὲ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ δίκαια. Μὴ θαυμάζετε, ἀδελφοί μου, εἰ μισεῖ ὑμᾶς ὁ κόσμος. ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι μεταβεβήκαμεν ἐκ τοῦ θανάτου εἰς τὴν ζωήν, ὅτι ἀγαπῶμεν τοὺς ἀδελφούς· ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν μένει ἐν τῷ θανάτῳ. πᾶς ὁ μισῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ ἀνθρωποκτόνος ἐστί, καὶ οἴδατε ὅτι πᾶς ἀνθρωποκτόνος οὐκ ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἐν ἑαυτῷ μένουσαν. ἐν τούτῳ ἐγνώκαμεν τὴν ἀγάπην, ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἔθηκε· καὶ ἡμεῖς ὀφείλομεν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀδελφῶν τὰς ψυχὰς τιθέναι. ὃς δ᾿ ἂν ἔχῃ τὸν βίον τοῦ κόσμου καὶ θεωρῇ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχοντα καὶ κλείσῃ τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτοῦ ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ, πῶς ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Θεοῦ μένει ἐν αὐτῷ; Τεκνία μου, μὴ ἀγαπῶμεν λόγῳ μηδὲ τῇ γλώσσῃ, ἀλλ᾿ ἐν ἔργῳ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ. καὶ ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἐσμέν, καὶ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πείσομεν τὰς καρδίας ἡμῶν, ὅτι ἐὰν καταγινώσκῃ ἡμῶν ἡ καρδία, ὅτι μείζων ἐστὶν ὁ Θεὸς τῆς καρδίας ἡμῶν καὶ γινώσκει πάντα. ἀγαπητοί, ἐὰν ἡ καρδία ἡμῶν μὴ καταγινώσκῃ ἡμῶν, παρρησίαν ἔχομεν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, καὶ ὃ ἐὰν αἰτῶμεν λαμβάνομεν παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ.

En aquel tiempo, Judas Iscariote, uno de los Doce, se fue donde los sumos sacerdotes para entregárselo. Al oírlo ellos, se alegraron y prometieron darle dinero. A partir de entonces anduvo buscando el momento oportuno para entregarlo. El primer día de los Ázimos, cuando se sacrificaba el cordero pascual, le preguntaron sus discípulos: «¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a hacer los preparativos para que comas el cordero de Pascua?» Entonces, envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: «Vayan a la ciudad. Les saldrá al paso un hombre con un cántaro de agua; síganle, y verán que entra en una casa. Digan entonces al dueño: ‘El Maestro dice: ¿Dónde está mi sala, donde pueda comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?’ Él les enseñará en el piso superior una sala grande, ya dispuesta y preparada; hagan allí los preparativos para nosotros.» Los discípulos salieron, llegaron a la ciudad, lo encontraron tal como les había dicho, y prepararon la Pascua. Al atardecer, llegó él con los Doce. Y mientras comían recostados, Jesús dijo: «Yo les aseguro que uno de ustedes, que está comiendo conmigo, me entregará.» Ellos empezaron a entristecerse y a preguntarle uno tras otro: «¿Acaso soy yo?» Él les dijo: «Uno de los Doce que moja conmigo en el mismo plato. Ciertamente el Hijo del hombre se va, como está escrito de él, pero ¡ay de aquel por quien el Hijo del hombre es entregado! ¡Más le habría valido a ese hombre no haber nacido!» Mientras estaban comiendo, tomó pan, lo bendijo, lo partió, se lo dio y dijo: «Tomen, éste es mi cuerpo.» Tomó luego una copa y, después de dar las gracias, se la pasó, y bebieron todos de ella. Y les dijo: «Ésta es mi sangre de la alianza, que es derramada por muchos. Yo les aseguro que ya no beberé del producto de la vid hasta el día en que lo beba, nuevo, en el Reino de Dios.» Una vez que cantaron los himnos, salieron hacia el monte de los Olivos. Jesús les dijo: «Todos van a escandalizarse, pues está escrito: Heriré al pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas. Pero después de mi resurrección, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea.» Pedro le dijo: «Aunque todos se escandalicen, yo no.» Jesús le contestó: «Yo te aseguro que hoy, esta misma noche, antes que el gallo cante dos veces, tú me habrás negado tres.» Pero él insistía: «Aunque tenga que morir contigo, no pienso negarte.» Lo mismo dijeron todos. Fueron a una propiedad, llamada Getsemaní, y dijo a sus discípulos: «Siéntense aquí, mientras yo hago oración.» Tomó consigo a Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y comenzó a sentir pavor y angustia. Les dijo entonces: «Mi alma está triste hasta el punto de morir; quédense aquí y velen.» Él se adelantó un poco, cayó en tierra y suplicaba que a ser posible pasara de él aquella hora. Decía: «¡Abbá, Padre!, todo es posible para ti; aparta de mí esta copa, pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú.» Volvió después y los encontró dormidos. Dijo entonces a Pedro: «Simón, ¿ya estás dormido?, ¿ni una hora has podido velar? Velen y oren, para que no caigan en tentación; que el espíritu está pronto, pero la carne es débil.» Y alejándose de nuevo, oró diciendo las mismas palabras. Volvió otra vez y los encontró dormidos, pues sus ojos estaban cargados. Ellos no sabían qué contestarle. Volvió por tercera vez y les dijo: «Ahora ya pueden dormir y descansar. Basta ya. Llegó la hora. Miren que el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los pecadores. ¡Levántense! ¡Vámonos! Miren, el que me va a entregar está cerca.» [BJ-SAOGM]

At that time, Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. And when they heard it they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him. And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the passover?” And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the householder, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover. And when it was evening he came with the twelve. And as they were at table eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” They began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. For the Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away; for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” But he said vehemently, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same. And they went to a place which was called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I pray.” And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but what you will.” And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer him. And he came the third time, and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come; the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” [RSV]

Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν. καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι πάντες σκανδαλισθήσεσθε ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ· ὅτι γέγραπται, πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα καὶ διασκορπισθήσονται τὰ πρόβατα· ἀλλὰ μετὰ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν. ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἔφη αὐτῷ· καὶ εἰ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται, ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ ἐγώ. καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι σὺ σήμερον ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ πρὶν ἢ δὶς ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με. ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἐκ περισσοῦ ἔλεγε μᾶλλον· ἐάν με δέῃ συναποθανεῖν σοι, οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι. ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ πάντες ἔλεγον. Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς χωρίον οὗ τὸ ὄνομα Γεθσημανῆ, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ· καθίσατε ὧδε ἕως προσεύξωμαι. καὶ παραλαμβάνει τὸν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην μεθ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ, καὶ ἤρξατο ἐκθαμβεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν καὶ λέγειν αὐτοῖς· περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε. καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ προσηύχετο ἵνα, εἰ δυνατόν ἐστι, παρέλθῃ ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἡ ὥρα, καὶ ἔλεγεν· ἀββᾶ ὁ πατήρ, πάντα δυνατά σοι· παρένεγκε τὸ ποτήριον ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ τοῦτο· ἀλλ᾿ οὐ τί ἐγὼ θέλω, ἀλλ᾿ εἴ τι σύ. καὶ ἔρχεται καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ· Σίμων, καθεύδεις; οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι; γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν· τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον, ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής. καὶ πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπών. καὶ ὑποστρέψας εὗρεν αὐτοὺς πάλιν καθεύδοντας· ἦσαν γὰρ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν καταβαρυνόμενοι, καὶ οὐκ ᾔδεισαν τί ἀποκριθῶσιν αὐτῷ. καὶ ἔρχεται τὸ τρίτον καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· καθεύδετε λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε! ἀπέχει· ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα· ἰδοὺ παραδίδοται ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν· ἐγείρεσθε, ἄγωμεν· ἰδοὺ ὁ παραδιδούς με ἤγγικε.
