Por aquellos días, un ángel del Señor habló así a Felipe: «Ponte en marcha hacia el sur, por el camino que baja de Jerusalén a Gaza atravesando la estepa.» Felipe se avió y partió. Por el camino vio a un etíope eunuco, alto funcionario de Candace, reina de los etíopes, que estaba a cargo de todos sus tesoros y que había venido a adorar en Jerusalén. En aquel momento regresaba sentado en su carro, leyendo al profeta Isaías. El Espíritu dijo a Felipe: «Acércate y ponte junto a ese carro.» Felipe corrió hasta él y le oyó leer al profeta Isaías. Le preguntó: «¿Entiendes lo que vas leyendo?» Él respondió: «¿Cómo lo puedo entender si nadie me guía en la lectura?» El etíope rogó a Felipe que subiese y se sentase con él. El pasaje de la Escritura que iba leyendo era éste: «Fue llevado como una oveja al matadero; y como cordero, mudo delante del que lo trasquila, así él no abre la boca. En su humillación le fue negada la justicia; ¿quién podrá contar su descendencia? Porque su vida fue arrancada de la tierra.» El eunuco preguntó a Felipe: «Te ruego que me digas de quién dice esto el profeta: ¿de sí mismo o de otro?» Felipe entonces tomó la palabra y, partiendo de este texto de la Escritura, se puso a anunciarle la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Siguiendo el camino, llegaron a un sitio donde había agua. El eunuco dijo: «Aquí hay agua; ¿qué impide que yo sea bautizado?» Dicho esto, mandó detener el carro. Bajaron ambos al agua, Felipe y el eunuco. Felipe lo bautizó, y, al subir del agua, el Espíritu del Señor lo arrebató, de modo que ya no volvió a verle el eunuco, que siguió gozoso su camino. In those days, an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert road. And he rose and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a minister of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.” So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless some one guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this: “As a sheep led to the slaughter or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken up from the earth.” And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, pray, does the prophet say this, about himself or about some one else?” Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture he told him the good news of Jesus. And as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught up Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. [RSV]

Ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις, ῎Αγγελος Κυρίου ἐλάλησε πρὸς Φίλιππον λέγων· ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύου κατὰ μεσημβρίαν ἐπὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τὴν καταβαίνουσαν ἀπὸ Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς Γάζαν· αὕτη ἐστὶν ἔρημος. καὶ ἀναστὰς ἐπορεύθη. καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ Αἰθίοψ εὐνοῦχος δυνάστης Κανδάκης τῆς βασιλίσσης Αἰθιόπων, ὃς ἦν ἐπὶ πάσης τῆς γάζης αὐτῆς, ὃς ἐληλύθει προσκυνήσων εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ, ἦν τε ὑποστρέφων καὶ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τοῦ ἅρματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνεγίνωσκε τὸν προφήτην Ἡσαΐαν. εἶπε δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμα τῷ Φιλίππῳ· πρόσελθε καὶ κολλήθητι τῷ ἅρματι τούτῳ. προσδραμὼν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ ἀναγινώσκοντος τὸν προφήτην Ἡσαΐαν, καὶ εἶπεν· ἆρά γε γινώσκεις ἃ ἀναγινώσκεις; ὁ δὲ εἶπε· πῶς γὰρ ἂν δυναίμην, ἐὰν μή τις ὁδηγήσῃ με; παρεκάλεσέ τε τὸν Φίλιππον ἀναβάντα καθίσαι σὺν αὐτῷ. ἡ δὲ περιοχὴ τῆς γραφῆς ἣν ἀνεγίνωσκεν ἦν αὕτη· ὡς πρόβατον ἐπὶ σφαγὴν ἤχθη· καὶ ὡς ἀμνὸς ἐναντίον τοῦ κείροντος αὐτὸν ἄφωνος, οὕτως οὐκ ἀνοίγει τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ. ἐν τῇ ταπεινώσει αὐτοῦ ἡ κρίσις αὐτοῦ ἤρθη· τὴν δὲ γενεὰν αὐτοῦ τίς διηγήσεται; ὅτι αἴρεται ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ. ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ εὐνοῦχος τῷ Φιλίππῳ εἶπε· δέομαί σου, περὶ τίνος ὁ προφήτης λέγει τοῦτο; περὶ ἑαυτοῦ ἢ περὶ ἑτέρου τινός; ἀνοίξας δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς γραφῆς ταύτης εὐηγγελίσατο αὐτῷ τὸν Ἰησοῦν. ὡς δὲ ἐπορεύοντο κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἦλθον ἐπί τι ὕδωρ, καί φησιν ὁ εὐνοῦχος· ἰδοὺ ὕδωρ· τί κωλύει με βαπτισθῆναι; εἶπε δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος· εἰ πιστεύεις ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας, ἔξεστιν. ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπε· πιστεύω τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἶναι τὸν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν. καὶ ἐκέλευσε στῆναι τὸ ἅρμα, καὶ κατέβησαν ἀμφότεροι εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ, ὅ τε Φίλιππος καὶ ὁ εὐνοῦχος, καὶ ἐβάπτισεν αὐτόν. ὅτε δὲ ἀνέβησαν ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος, Πνεῦμα Κυρίου ἥρπασε τὸν Φίλιππον, καὶ οὐκ εἶδεν αὐτὸν οὐκέτι ὁ εὐνοῦχος· ἐπορεύετο γὰρ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ χαίρων.

En aquel tiempo, los Doce se acercaron a Jesús y le dijeron: «Despide a la gente para que vayan a los pueblos y aldeas del contorno y busquen alojamiento y comida, porque aquí estamos en un lugar deshabitado.» Él les dijo: «Denles ustedes de comer.» Pero ellos respondieron: «No tenemos más que cinco panes y dos peces, a no ser que vayamos nosotros a comprar alimentos para toda esta gente.» Es que había como cinco mil hombres. Jesús dijo entonces a sus discípulos: «Hagan que se acomoden por grupos de unos cincuenta.» Lo hicieron así y acomodaron a todos. Tomó entonces los cinco panes y los dos peces, y, levantando los ojos al cielo, pronunció sobre ellos la bendición, los partió y se los fue dando a los discípulos para que, a su vez, se los sirvieran a la gente. Comieron todos hasta saciarse, y se recogieron doce canastos con los trozos que les habían sobrado. Una vez él estaba orando a solas y sus discípulos se le acercaron. [BJ-SAOGM]

At that time, the twelve came to Jesus and said to him, “Send the crowd away, to go into the villages and country round about, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a lonely place.” But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish — unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in companies, about fifty each.” And they did so, and made them all sit down. And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what was left over, twelve baskets of broken pieces. Now it happened that as he was praying alone his disciples were with him. [RSV]

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, προσελθόντες τῷ Ἰησοῦ οἱ δώδεκα εἶπον αὐτῷ· ἀπόλυσον τὸν ὄχλον, ἵνα πορευθέντες εἰς τὰς κύκλῳ κώμας καὶ τοὺς ἀγροὺς καταλύσωσι καὶ εὕρωσιν ἐπισιτισμόν, ὅτι ὧδε ἐν ἐρήμῳ τόπῳ ἐσμέν. εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν. οἱ δὲ εἶπον· οὐκ εἰσὶν ἡμῖν πλεῖον ἢ πέντε ἄρτοι καὶ ἰχθύες δύο, εἰ μήτι πορευθέντες ἡμεῖς ἀγοράσωμεν εἰς πάντα τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον βρώματα· ἦσαν γὰρ ὡσεὶ ἄνδρες πεντακισχίλιοι. εἶπε δὲ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ· κατακλίνατε αὐτοὺς κλισίας ἀνὰ πεντήκοντα. καὶ ἐποίησαν οὕτω καὶ ἀνέκλιναν ἅπαντας. λαβὼν δὲ τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας, ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ κατέκλασε, καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς παραθεῖναι τῷ ὄχλῳ. καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν πάντες, καὶ ἤρθη τὸ περισσεῦσαν αὐτοῖς κλασμάτων κόφινοι δώδεκα. Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτὸν προσευχόμενον καταμόνας, συνῆσαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.

On October 11, we commemorate the holy Apostle Philip, one of the seven Deacons.

Τῇ ΙΑʹ τοῦ αὐτοῦ μηνὸς μνήμη τοῦ ἁγίου Ἀποστόλου Φιλίππου, ἑνὸς τῶν ἑπτὰ Διακόνων.

Por sus santas intercesiones, oh Dios, ten misericordia de nosotros. Amén.

By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy on us. Amen.
