Hermanos, cuando no conocían a Dios, servían a los que en realidad no son dioses. Mas, ahora que han conocido a Dios, o mejor, que él los ha conocido, ¿cómo vuelven a someterse a esos elementos sin fuerza ni valor, a los cuales quieren servir de nuevo? Celebran la llegada de ciertos días, meses, estaciones y años. Me da miedo pensar que mis desvelos por ustedes puedan haber sido inútiles. Háganse como yo, puesto que yo me hice como ustedes. Recuerdo que no me hicieron ningún agravio. Ya saben que una enfermedad me proporcionó la ocasión de evangelizarlos por primera vez. Pues bien, a pesar del trastorno que suponía para ustedes mi condición física, no me mostraron desprecio ni repulsa; más bien me recibieron como a un mensajero de Dios: como a Cristo Jesús. ¿Dónde están ahora los parabienes que se daban? Pues soy testigo de que ustedes se hubieran arrancado los ojos, de haber sido posible, para dármelos. ¿Piensan que me he vuelto enemigo de ustedes diciéndoles la verdad? Ese interés que algunos tienen por ustedes no es sano; quieren sin duda alejarse de mí para que se interesen por ellos. Bien está ser objeto de interés para el bien, pero siempre, y no sólo cuando yo estoy entre ustedes. ¡Hijitos míos!, por ustedes sufro de nuevo dolores de parto, hasta ver a Cristo formado en ustedes. Quisiera hallarme ahora en medio de ustedes, para poder acomodar el tono de mi voz, pues no sé cómo habérmelas con ustedes. Ustedes, los que quieren estar sometidos a la ley, díganme una cosa: ¿No han oído lo que dice la ley? [BJ-SAOGM]

Brethren, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by nature are no gods; but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental principles, whose slaves you want to be once more? You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years! I am afraid I have labored over you in vain. Brethren, I beseech you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong; you know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first; and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. What has become of the satisfaction you felt? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? They make much of you, but for no good purpose; they want to shut you out, that you may make much of, and not only when I am present with you. My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you! I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. Tell me, you who desire to be under law, do you not hear the law? [RSV]

Ἀδελφοί, τότε μὲν οὐκ εἰδότες Θεὸν ἐδουλεύσατε τοῖς μὴ φύσει οὖσι θεοῖς· νῦν δὲ γνόντες Θεόν, μᾶλλον δὲ γνωσθέντες ὑπὸ Θεοῦ, πῶς ἐπιστρέφετε πάλιν ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ πτωχὰ στοιχεῖα, οἷς πάλιν ἄνωθεν δουλεύειν θέλετε; ἡμέρας παρατηρεῖσθε καὶ μῆνας καὶ καιροὺς καὶ ἐνιαυτούς! φοβοῦμαι ὑμᾶς μήπως εἰκῆ κεκοπίακα εἰς ὑμᾶς. Γίνεσθε ὡς ἐγώ, ὅτι κἀγὼ ὡς ὑμεῖς, ἀδελφοί, δέομαι ὑμῶν. οὐδέν με ἠδικήσατε. οἴδατε δὲ ὅτι δι᾽ ἀσθένειαν τῆς σαρκὸς εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν τὸ πρότερον, καὶ τὸν πειρασμόν μου τὸν ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου οὐκ ἐξουθενήσατε οὐδὲ ἐξεπτύσατε, ἀλλ᾽ ὡς ἄγγελον Θεοῦ ἐδέξασθέ με, ὡς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν. τίς οὖν ἦν ὁ μακαρισμὸς ὑμῶν; μαρτυρῶ γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰ δυνατὸν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν ἐξορύξαντες ἂν ἐδώκατέ μοι. ὥστε ἐχθρὸς ὑμῶν γέγονα ἀληθεύων ὑμῖν; ζηλοῦσιν ὑμᾶς οὐ καλῶς, ἀλλὰ ἐκκλεῖσαι ὑμᾶς θέλουσιν, ἵνα αὐτοὺς ζηλοῦτε. καλὸν δὲ τὸ ζηλοῦσθαι ἐν καλῷ πάντοτε καὶ μὴ μόνον ἐν τῷ παρεῖναί με πρὸς ὑμᾶς. τεκνία μου, οὓς πάλιν ὠδίνω, ἄχρις οὗ μορφωθῇ Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν! ἤθελον δὲ παρεῖναι πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἄρτι καὶ ἀλλάξαι τὴν φωνήν μου, ὅτι ἀποροῦμαι ἐν ὑμῖν. Λέγετέ μοι οἱ ὑπὸ νόμον θέλοντες εἶναι· τὸν νόμον οὐκ ἀκούετε;

Dijo el Señor: «¿Con quién podré comparar a los hombres de esta generación? ¿A quién se parecen? Se parecen a los chiquillos que están sentados en la plaza y se gritan unos a otros: ‘Les hemos tocado la flauta, y no han bailado, les hemos entonado canciones tristes, y no han llorado.’ Porque resulta que ha venido Juan el Bautista, que no comía pan ni bebía vino, y dicen: ‘Está endemoniado.’ Ha venido el Hijo del hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: ‘Ahí tienen un comilón y un borracho, amigo de publicanos y pecadores.’ Pero la Sabiduría se ha acreditado por todos sus hijos.» [BJ-SAOGM]

The Lord said, “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.” [RSV]

Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος· Τίνι ὁμοιώσω τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης, καὶ τίνι εἰσὶν ὅμοιοι; ὅμοιοί εἰσι παιδίοις τοῖς ἐν ἀγορᾷ καθημένοις καὶ προσφωνοῦσιν ἀλλήλοις καὶ λέγουσιν· ηὐλήσαμεν ὑμῖν, καὶ οὐκ ὠρχήσασθε, ἐθρηνήσαμεν ὑμῖν, καὶ οὐκ ἐκλαύσατε. ἐλήλυθε γὰρ Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστὴς μήτε ἄρτον ἐσθίων μήτε οἶνον πίνων, καὶ λέγετε· δαιμόνιον ἔχει. ἐλήλυθεν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων, καὶ λέγετε· ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος φάγος καὶ οἰνοπότης, φίλος τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν. καὶ ἐδικαιώθη ἡ σοφία ἀπὸ τῶν τέκνων αὐτῆς πάντων!

Por las intercesiones de tus santos, oh Dios, ten misericordia de nosotros. Amén.
