Hermanos, es Dios el que nos conforta en Cristo a nosotros y a ustedes, y el que nos ungió. Él fue quien nos marcó con su sello y quien puso el Espíritu en nuestros corazones, como arras de lo venidero. Dios es testigo —¡y pondría en juego mi vida!— de que, si todavía no he ido a Corinto, ha sido por consideración a ustedes. Nosotros no pretendemos dominar sobre su fe, pues ya se mantienen firmes en ella; sólo queremos contribuir a su alegría. En mi interior tomé la decisión de no volver a visitarlos, si eso había de causarles tristeza. Porque si yo los entristezco, ¿quién podría alegrarme, sino el que se ha entristecido por mi causa? Y si les escribí aquello, fue para que no me entristeciesen a mi ida precisamente los mismos que deberían procurarme alegría. Pues estaba convencido de que mi alegría y la de ustedes deberían coincidir. Efectivamente, les escribí tremendamente afligido y con el corazón angustiado; incluso lloré. Pero no lo hice para entristecerlos, sino para que se dieran cuenta de lo mucho que los quiero. [BJ-SAOGM] |
Brethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me — it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. [RSV] |

Dijo el Señor: «Traten a los hombres como quieren que ellos los traten. Si aman a los que los aman, ¿qué mérito tienen? También los pecadores aman a los que les aman. Si hacen bien a los que les hacen el bien, ¿qué mérito tienen? ¡También los pecadores hacen otro tanto! Si prestan a aquellos de quienes esperan recibir, ¿qué mérito tienen? También los pecadores prestan a los pecadores para recibir lo correspondiente. Más bien, amen a sus enemigos; hagan el bien y presten sin esperar nada a cambio; entonces su recompensa será grande y serán hijos del Altísimo, porque él es bueno con los desagradecidos y los perversos. Sean compasivos como su Padre es compasivo.» [BJ-SAOGM] |
The Lord said, “And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, despairing of no man; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.
