Only-begotten Son and Logos of God, being immortal, You condescended for our salvation to take flesh from the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary and, without change, became man. Christ, our God, You were crucified and conquered death by death. Being one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit: Save us.

Hermanos, la predicación de la cruz es una locura para los que se pierden; mas para los que se salvan —para nosotros— es fuerza de Dios. Porque dice la Escritura: ‘Destruiré la sabiduría de los sabios e inutilizaré la inteligencia de los inteligentes. ¿Dónde está el sabio? ¿Dónde el docto?’ ¿Dónde el intelectual que se ciñe a simples criterios humanos? ¿Acaso no entonteció Dios la sabiduría del mundo? De hecho, como el mundo, mediante su propia sabiduría, no conoció a Dios en su divina sabiduría, quiso Dios salvar a los creyentes mediante la locura de la predicación. Así, mientras los judíos piden señales y los griegos buscan sabiduría, nosotros predicamos a un Cristo crucificado: escándalo para los judíos, locura para los gentiles; mas para los llamados, lo mismo judíos que griegos, un Cristo que es fuerza de Dios y sabiduría de Dios. Brethren, the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. [RSV]

En aquel tiempo, los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron consejo para eliminar a Jesús. Se presentaron ante Pilato, diciendo: «¡Crucifícalo, crucifícalo!» Replicó Pilato: «Tómenlo ustedes y crucifíquenlo, porque yo no encuentro en él ningún delito.» Los judíos le contestaron: «Nosotros tenemos una Ley y, según esa Ley, debe morir, porque se tiene por Hijo de Dios.» Cuando oyó Pilato estas palabras, se atemorizó aún más. Volvió a entrar en el pretorio y preguntó a Jesús: «¿De dónde eres tú?» Pero Jesús no le respondió. Le dijo Pilato: «¿A mí no me hablas? ¿No sabes que tengo poder para soltarte y poder para crucificarte?» Respondió Jesús: «No tendrías contra mí ningún poder, si no se te hubiera dado de arriba; por eso, el que me ha entregado a ti tiene mayor pecado.» Al oír Pilato estas palabras, hizo salir a Jesús y se sentó en el tribunal, en el lugar llamado Enlosado, en hebreo Gabbatá. Era el día de la Preparación de la Pascua, hacia la hora sexta. Dijo Pilato a los judíos: «Aquí tienen a su rey.» Ellos gritaron: «¡Fuera, fuera! ¡Crucifícalo!» Replicó Pilato: «¿A su rey voy a crucificar?» Contestaron los sumos sacerdotes: «No tenemos más rey que el César.» Entonces se lo entregó para que fuera crucificado. Tomaron, pues, a Jesús, que, cargando con su cruz, salió hacia el lugar llamado Calvario, que en hebreo se dice Gólgota. Allí crucificaron a Jesús, junto con otros dos, uno a cada lado de él. Pilato redactó también una inscripción y la puso sobre la cruz. Lo escrito decía así: «Jesús el Nazareno, el rey de los judíos.» Esta inscripción, que estaba escrita en hebreo, latín y griego, la leyeron muchos judíos, porque el lugar donde había sido crucificado Jesús estaba cerca de la ciudad. Junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre y la hermana de su madre, María, mujer de Clopás, y María Magdalena. Jesús, viendo a su madre y junto a ella al discípulo a quien amaba, dijo a su madre: «Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo.» Luego dijo al discípulo: «Ahí tienes a tu madre.» Y desde aquella hora el discípulo la acogió en su casa. Después de esto, sabiendo Jesús que ya todo estaba cumplido, para que se cumpliera la Escritura, dijo: «Tengo sed.» Cuando tomó Jesús el vinagre, dijo: «Todo está cumplido.» E inclinando la cabeza, entregó el espíritu. At that time, the chief priests and the elders held counsel against Jesus, how to destroy him. And they went to Pilate, saying, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid; he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. Pilate therefore said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.” When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called the Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King!” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
