Hermanos, la caridad es paciente y bondadosa; la caridad no es envidiosa, no es jactanciosa ni orgullosa; es decorosa; no busca su interés; no se irrita; no toma en cuenta el mal; no se alegra de la injusticia; se alegra con la verdad. Todo lo excusa. Todo lo cree. Todo lo espera. Todo lo soporta. La caridad no acabará nunca; en cambio, desaparecerán las profecías, cesarán las lenguas y desaparecerá la ciencia. En realidad, nuestra ciencia es parcial, y parcial nuestra profecía; pero, cuando venga lo perfecto, desaparecerá lo parcial. Cuando yo era niño, hablaba como niño, pensaba como niño, razonaba como niño; pero, al hacerme hombre, dejé todas las cosas de niño. Ahora vemos como en un espejo, de forma borrosa; pero entonces veremos cara a cara. Ahora conozco de un modo parcial, pero entonces conoceré tal como soy conocido. Ahora subsisten la fe, la esperanza y la caridad, estas tres realidades. Pero la mayor de todas ellas es la caridad. Busquen la caridad, pero aspiren también a los dones espirituales, especialmente a la profecía. El que habla en lenguas no habla a la gente, sino a Dios. Y es que nadie le entiende, pues dice en espíritu cosas misteriosas. Por el contrario, el que tiene don de profecía habla a los demás para su crecimiento en la fe; les exhorta y los conforta. El que habla en lenguas se consolida a sí mismo; pero el profeta contribuye al crecimiento de toda la asamblea. [BJ-SAOGM]

Brethren, love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one hears, but he utters mysteries in the spirit. On the other hand, he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless some one interprets, so that the church may be edified. [RSV]

Ἀδελφοί, ἡ ἀγάπη μακροθυμεῖ, χρηστεύεται, ἡ ἀγάπη οὐ ζηλοῖ, ἡ ἀγάπη οὐ περπερεύεται, οὐ φυσιοῦται, οὐκ ἀσχημονεῖ, οὐ ζητεῖ τὰ ἑαυτῆς, οὐ παροξύνεται, οὐ λογίζεται τὸ κακόν, οὐ χαίρει ἐπὶ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ, συγχαίρει δὲ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ· πάντα στέγει, πάντα πιστεύει, πάντα ἐλπίζει, πάντα ὑπομένει. ἡ ἀγάπη οὐδέποτε ἐκπίπτει. εἴτε δὲ προφητεῖαι, καταργηθήσονται· εἴτε γλῶσσαι, παύσονται· εἴτε γνῶσις, καταργηθήσεται. ἐκ μέρους δὲ γινώσκομεν καὶ ἐκ μέρους προφητεύομεν· ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ τὸ τέλειον, τότε τὸ ἐκ μέρους καταργηθήσεται. ὅτε ἤμην νήπιος, ὡς νήπιος ἐλάλουν, ὡς νήπιος ἐφρόνουν, ὡς νήπιος ἐλογιζόμην· ὅτε δὲ γέγονα ἀνήρ, κατήργηκα τὰ τοῦ νηπίου. βλέπομεν γὰρ ἄρτι δι᾿ ἐσόπτρου ἐν αἰνίγματι, τότε δὲ πρόσωπον πρὸς πρόσωπον· ἄρτι γινώσκω ἐκ μέρους, τότε δὲ ἐπιγνώσομαι καθὼς καὶ ἐπεγνώσθην. νυνὶ δὲ μένει πίστις, ἐλπίς, ἀγάπη, τὰ τρία ταῦτα· μείζων δὲ τούτων ἡ ἀγάπη. Διώκετε τὴν ἀγάπην· ζηλοῦτε δὲ τὰ πνευματικά, μᾶλλον δὲ ἵνα προφητεύητε. ὁ γὰρ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις λαλεῖ, ἀλλὰ τῷ Θεῷ· οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἀκούει, πνεύματι δὲ λαλεῖ μυστήρια· ὁ δὲ προφητεύων ἀνθρώποις λαλεῖ οἰκοδομὴν καὶ παράκλησιν καὶ παραμυθίαν. ὁ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ ἑαυτὸν οἰκοδομεῖ, ὁ δὲ προφητεύων ἐκκλησίαν οἰκοδομεῖ. θέλω δὲ πάντας ὑμᾶς λαλεῖν γλώσσαις, μᾶλλον δὲ ἵνα προφητεύητε· μείζων γὰρ ὁ προφητεύων ἢ ὁ λαλῶν γλώσσαις, ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ διερμηνεύῃ, ἵνα ἡ ἐκκλησία οἰκοδομὴν λάβῃ.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús subió al monte y llamó a los que él quiso. Cuando estuvieron junto a él, creó un grupo de Doce, para que estuvieran con él y para enviarlos a predicar con poder de expulsar los demonios. Creó a los Doce: a Simón, a quien llamó Pedro; a Santiago el de Zebedeo y a Juan, el hermano de Santiago, a quienes puso por nombre Boanerges, es decir, hijos del trueno; a Andrés, Felipe, Bartolomé, Mateo, Tomás, Santiago el de Alfeo, Tadeo, Simón el Cananeo y Judas Iscariote, el mismo que lo entregó. De vuelta a casa, se aglomeró otra vez la muchedumbre, de modo que no podían comer. Sus parientes, al enterarse, fueron a hacerse cargo de él, pues pensaban que estaba fuera de sí.» [BJ-SAOGM]

At that time, Jesus went up on the mountain, and called to him those whom he desired; and they came to him. And he appointed twelve, to be with him, and to be sent out to preach and have authority to cast out demons: Simon whom he surnamed Peter; James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, whom he surnamed Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder; Andrew and Philip and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Then he went home; and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for people were saying, “He is beside himself.” [RSV]
