Hermanos, todos los santos, por la fe, sometieron reinos, administraron justicia, alcanzaron las promesas y cerraron la boca a los leones; apagaron la violencia del fuego, escaparon al filo de la espada, curaron de sus enfermedades, fueron valientes en la guerra y rechazaron ejércitos extranjeros. Gracias a ellos, algunas mujeres recobraron resucitados a sus muertos. Unos fueron torturados, rehusando la liberación por conseguir una resurrección mejor; otros soportaron la prueba de burlas y azotes, de cadenas y prisiones. Fueron apedreados, torturados, aserrados, muertos a espada; anduvieron errantes, cubiertos de pieles de ovejas y de cabras; se vieron faltos de todo; fueron oprimidos y maltratados. Hombres de los que no era digno el mundo anduvieron errantes por desiertos y montañas, por grutas y cavernas. Y todos ellos, aunque alabados por su fe, no consiguieron el objeto de las promesas. Dios tenía dispuesto algo mejor para nosotros, de modo que no llegaran ellos sin nosotros a la perfección. Por tanto, también nosotros, teniendo en torno nuestro tan gran nube de testigos, sacudamos todo lastre y el pecado que nos asedia, y corramos con constancia la carrera que se nos propone, con los ojos fijos en Jesús, que inicia y lleva a la perfección la fe. Brethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated — of whom the world was not worthy — wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin that easily distracts, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Ἀδελφοί, οἱ ἅγιοι πάντες διὰ πίστεως κατηγωνίσαντο βασιλείας, εἰργάσαντο δικαιοσύνην, ἐπέτυχον ἐπαγγελιῶν, ἔφραξαν στόματα λεόντων, ἔσβεσαν δύναμιν πυρός, ἔφυγον στόματα μαχαίρας, ἐνεδυναμώθησαν ἀπὸ ἀσθενείας, ἐγενήθησαν ἰσχυροὶ ἐν πολέμῳ, παρεμβολὰς ἔκλιναν ἀλλοτρίων· ἔλαβον γυναῖκες ἐξ ἀναστάσεως τοὺς νεκροὺς αὐτῶν· ἄλλοι δὲ ἐτυμπανίσθησαν, οὐ προσδεξάμενοι τὴν ἀπολύτρωσιν, ἵνα κρείττονος ἀναστάσεως τύχωσιν· ἕτεροι δὲ ἐμπαιγμῶν καὶ μαστίγων πεῖραν ἔλαβον, ἔτι δὲ δεσμῶν καὶ φυλακῆς· ἐλιθάσθησαν, ἐπρίσθησαν, ἐπειράσθησαν, ἐν φόνῳ μαχαίρας ἀπέθανον, περιῆλθον ἐν μηλωταῖς, ἐν αἰγείοις δέρμασιν, ὑστερούμενοι, θλιβόμενοι, κακουχούμενοι, ὧν οὐκ ἦν ἄξιος ὁ κόσμος, ἐν ἐρημίαις πλανώμενοι καὶ ὄρεσι καὶ σπηλαίοις καὶ ταῖς ὀπαῖς τῆς γῆς. Καὶ οὗτοι πάντες μαρτυρηθέντες διὰ τῆς πίστεως οὐκ ἐκομίσαντο τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν, τοῦ Θεοῦ περὶ ἡμῶν κρεῖττόν τι προβλεψαμένου, ἵνα μὴ χωρὶς ἡμῶν τελειωθῶσι. Τοιγαροῦν καὶ ἡμεῖς, τοσοῦτον ἔχοντες περικείμενον ἡμῖν νέφος μαρτύρων, ὄγκον ἀποθέμενοι πάντα καὶ τὴν εὐπερίστατον ἁμαρτίαν, δι᾽ ὑπομονῆς τρέχωμεν τὸν προκείμενον ἡμῖν ἀγῶνα, ἀφορῶντες εἰς τὸν τῆς πίστεως ἀρχηγὸν καὶ τελειωτὴν Ἰησοῦν.

Dijo el Señor a sus discípulos: «Miren que yo los envío como ovejas en medio de lobos. Sean, pues, prudentes como las serpientes, y sencillos como las palomas. Guárdense de los hombres, porque los entregarán a los tribunales y los azotarán en sus sinagogas; serán conducidos ante gobernadores y reyes por mi causa, para que den testimonio ante ellos y ante los paganos. Mas cuando los entreguen, no se preocupen de cómo o qué van a hablar. Lo que tengan que hablar se les comunicará en aquel momento. Porque no serán ustedes los que hablen; será el Espíritu de su Padre el que hablará en ustedes. Entregará a la muerte hermano a hermano y padre a hijo; se rebelarán hijos contra padres y los matarán. Serán odiados por todos a causa de mi nombre, pero el que persevere hasta el fin se salvará.» [BJ-SAOGM]
The Lord said to his disciples, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.” [RSV]
Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ μαθηταῖς· Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς πρόβατα ἐν μέσῳ λύκων· γίνεσθε οὖν φρόνιμοι ὡς οἱ ὄφεις καὶ ἀκέραιοι ὡς αἱ περιστεραί. Προσέχετε δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων· παραδώσουσι γὰρ ὑμᾶς εἰς συνέδρια καὶ ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν μαστιγώσουσιν ὑμᾶς· καὶ ἐπὶ ἡγεμόνας δὲ καὶ βασιλεῖς ἀχθήσεσθε ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν. ὅταν δὲ παραδώσουσιν ὑμᾶς, μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς ἢ τί λαλήσετε· δοθήσεται γὰρ ὑμῖν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ τί λαλήσετε. οὐ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ λαλοῦντες, ἀλλὰ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν τὸ λαλοῦν ἐν ὑμῖν. Παραδώσει δὲ ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὸν εἰς θάνατον καὶ πατὴρ τέκνον, καὶ ἐπαναστήσονται τέκνα ἐπὶ γονεῖς καὶ θανατώσουσιν αὐτούς· καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου· ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται.

El 1 de agosto celebramos la procesión de la preciosa y vivificante cruz. También conmemoramos a los siete santos mártires macabeos, a su madre Solomonia, y a su maestro Eleazar.
On August 1 is the procession of the precious and life-giving Cross. We also commemorate the seven holy Martyrs, the Maccabees: Abim, Anthony, Guria, Eleazar, Eusebona, Achim, and Marcellus; and their mother Solomone; and Eleazar their teacher.
Τῇ Αʹ τοῦ αὐτοῦ μηνός, ἡ πρόοδος τοῦ τιμίου καὶ ζωοποιοῦ Σταυροῦ· καὶ μνήμη τῶν ἁγίων ἑπτὰ Μαρτύρων τῶν Μακκαβαίων, Ἀβείμ, Ἀντωνίου, Γουρία, Ἐλεαζάρου, Εὐσεβωνᾶ, Ἀχείμ, καὶ Μαρκέλλου, καὶ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῶν Σολομονῆς, καὶ Ἐλεαζάρου τοῦ διδασκάλου αὐτῶν.
